In this article:
The future of hitting in the state of Michigan was on display from the Class of 2023 at the Michigan Top 250 Expo last Friday.
Here’s the evaluations for each of the 16 hitters from the Class of 2023 that took part in the event.
Sienna Dailey Sienna Dailey 5'9" | OH South Lyon | 2023 MI , OH South Lyon/Michigan Elite – Daily was putting on some nice passing during defensive drills and followed that up with some powerful swings on her attacks. Dailey displayed the talents to be a reliable six-rotation player.
Michelle Domey, OH Anchor Bay/Crank It – Domey was doing a nice job of confusing defenders with her offspeed swings and she had a nice flow to her game. She meshed well with her fellow competitors on the court and steadily made plays throughout the night.
Olivia Gardner Olivia Gardner 6'2" | MB Dakota | 2023 State MI , MH Dakota/Michigan Elite – Gardner stands 6’1” and can make plays on offense and defense, but her effort is what really caught my eye. She was shining throughout the night just by providing a little extra effort to make a play. Her work ethic, combined with her talent, is going to make her a great asset at the next level.
Paige Giehtbrock Paige Giehtbrock 6'0" | OH Clarkston | 2023 State MI , OH Clarkston/Michigan Elite – Giehtbrock has a great all-around game. She can deliver a powerful spike from the front and back row, and she’s also a great passer on defense. One trait she showed last Friday that stood out from the rest of the competitors was her vocal leadership.
Jasmine Kiser, OH Howell/Michigan Elite – Kiser started a little quiet, but pulled that competitiveness out of her as the night went on. Once she got in the flow, she showed a swing with a lot of potential and good footwork on the floor.
Olivia Krill, RS Lakeland/Legacy – Krill looked a little timid in the early going, but brought something out as the night went on. She’s got the size and athleticism to be an impact player. As her confidence grows, so should her finishing ability.
Emma Larkins Emma Larkins 5'11" | OH Clarkston | 2023 State MI , OH Clarkston/Michigan Elite – Another talented Clarkston product, Larkins has a great mix of size and power. Her athleticism really stood out, as she’s able to make great adjustments to the ball. As Larkins fine-tunes her swing, she’s going to be tough to stop.
Emily Liebetreu, MH St. Clair/Infinity – Liebetreu has a lot of power at the net that was hard for opponents to contend with. She has a high ceiling as she continues to add pieces to her game. When she’s able to rely on more than just her power swing, big things will be ahead.
Remi Madison Remi Madison 5'9" | OH Grand Blanc | 2023 State MI , OH Grand Blanc/Michigan Elite – There’s just a different sound when Madison takes a swing. She has the explosiveness and technique to finish anywhere on the court. Madison was testing every defender she came across.
Kayla Munson Kayla Munson 5'11" | OH Chelsea | 2023 State MI , OH Chelsea/Michigan Elite – Munson was a gamer. She was putting out a lot of effort last Friday and that led to her making a lot of hustle plays. She seemed to have endless energy and still produced solid swings each time.
Reagan Sass Reagan Sass 5'10" | OH Marian | 2023 State MI , OH Marian/Michigan Elite – Sass is a very skillful hitter that can mix up her shots and contribute with her defensive skills. She knows where to be on the floor and lets the play come to her.
Ella Schomer Ella Schomer 6'0" | RS Marian | 2023 State #142 Nation MI , RS Marian/Michigan Elite – Schomer is an ever-improving hitter that keeps adding new shots and skills to her arsenal. She’s got a lot of confidence after a strong 2020 prep season and it’s showing in her individual skillset. Schomer is a name to definitely keep an eye on in 2023’s class.
Anneliese Schriber, RS Troy Athens/Michigan Elite – Schriber really moved smoothly around the court and seemed to glide to the ball on her swings. Her technique was solid and there’s still a lot of untapped potential there.
Meredith Simmons Meredith Simmons 5'10" | OH Rockford | 2023 State MI , OH Rockford/FaR Out – Simmons stood out for her competitiveness. Only standing 5’9”, she consistently stepped up and brought an explosive swing to the net. Often matched up against some 2022 bigs, Simmons never backed down and found ways to succeed.
Gabriela Stevens, MH Grand Blanc/Michigan Elite – Stevens had some off swings early, but you could see the talent is there. What was encouraging to see is she didn’t get down on herself and stayed focused. As the night went on, Stevens was making some highlight-reel plays. She’s a gamer, and isn’t going to let a mistake stay in her head.
Lija Sverns, MB Caledonia/FaR Out – Sverns moves really well at the net and was able to put herself in position to succeed often, both with her blocking and hitting. Her instincts were paying off throughout the night.
