But, why should basketball have all the fun?
Bracket Busters can happen on a weekly basis in volleyball.
All you need is one player to really raise their game and lift their team to another level.
In the Class of 2022, here’s some Bracket Buster talents that can make a difference for their squad.
Renee Brines Renee Brines 5'9" | S Cadillac | 2022 State MI , S Cadillac/FaR Out
Setters control a lot of the flow on the court and Brines does it about as well as anyone in the Class of 2022. During her prep season with Cadillac, Brines put up over 1,200 assists while also finishing second on the team in kills (265) and tallying over 100 aces. Her complete array of offensive skills is complimented by a great defensive game as well. She can dig and pass at a high level. Having such a well-rounded athlete at setter definitely can make a team a bracket-buster.
Brooke Dzwik Brooke Dzwik 5'10" | OH Battle Creek St. Phil | 2022 State MI , OH Battle Creek St. Philip/Team Pineapple
There wasn’t much more of a bracket buster in Division 4 volleyball last prep season than Dzwik. The 2022 prospect was a noticeable difference maker the second she took the court. The club season, she is competing in Indiana and is trying to add a complete defensive game to her explosive offensive attack. Dzwik competes on a different level in Division 4, but now she’s trying to bust her way into being one of the best in the state regardless of class.
Summer Jidas Summer Jidas 5'5" | DS/L Clarkston | 2022 State MI , L/DS Clarkston/Legacy
Jidas came to Clarkston as an energetic defender, but she has really developed into a game-changing libero over the past few years. Jidas has a tremendous serve that can turn the tide of a match, and her athletic passing skills are able to keep her team in-system throughout a long rally. Jidas has the athleticism and explosion to put on a good swing from the back row when needed as well.
Emily Struckmeyer Emily Struckmeyer 6'1" | MB Lowell | 2022 State MI , MH Lowell/FaR Out
Middles can definitely turn the tide in a match when they get the hot hand. This past year, Struckmeyer has seen her role increase in both preps and club, and she has been able to take on the challenge. The 6’0” middle has ever-improving footwork, and improving court vision when it comes to blocking. This next year will be a chance for Struckmeyer to establish herself as one of the best in the state and really bust some opposing teams’ hopes.
Sophia Treder Sophia Treder 6'0" | OH Marian | 2022 State MI , OH Marian/Michigan Elite
As an outside for a deep-hitting team like Marian, Treder was definitely an unsung hero on the Division 1 championship squad. She has continued her growth during the club season and is proving to be capable of taking over a match. Treder can attack, block, pass and serve. Though she may not get the attention of some of her peers, she’s definitely becoming the player that can push her team over the top.
