The champions have all been deservedly recognized, so now we’ll take some time to highlight the most intriguing prospects that stood out during the season with consistent and efficient play for their high schools.
We start with the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 1A Division, which saw Neches secure its third-straight State Championship title. Setters are a key part of any team and here are a few who excelled in their duties.
Emily Hill – Neches – 2021
Emily Hill had a phenomenal group of hitters to work with last season and props to her for making the absolute best of it. The 5’7” Hill likes to accelerate the game when possible but her sets never lack in accuracy, making like extremely easy for her hitters. An All-State first team member according to the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) and an All-Tournament team member, Hill also contributed in other areas of the game, most notably on defense and from the service line. Her performance at the State Championship final, in which she tallied 40 assists and 15 digs, is a good representation of her importance to the Lady Tigers.
Ruby Rumohr – Blum – 2024
Experience is typically an important asset for a setter but Ruby Rumohr proved last season that the best can excel even without it. In her first year of high school volleyball, the talented prospect took Blum all the way to the State Championship final. Rumohr was solid and reliable on her ball distribution, registering 466 assists during the season (8.2 per set), 20 of which at the State Championship final, and produced at a decent level on defense (91 digs) and from the service line (25 aces). Her best years are still probably ahead of her but she still managed to earn an All-State second-team nomination last season according to the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA).
Jolie Frosch – D’Hanis – 2023
Jolie Frosch’s main asset as a setter is her consistency. Working with a good pass or out-of-system, the D’Hanis prospect is always capable of setting her teammates up with hittable balls, which is extremely beneficial to the team. That’s why she registered a whopping 837 assists for the Cowboys last season. Despite her 5’7” size, Forsch also knows her way around the net, which resulted in 69 kills and 17 blocks in 2020. Her all-around game is completed by her serving ability, which generated 74 aces for the team, and her defensive skills, which produced 155 digs.
