The champions have all been deservedly recognized, so now we’ll take some time to highlight the most intriguing prospects that stood out during the season with consistent and efficient play for their high schools.
During the next few days, we’ll analyze the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 2A Division, which saw Iola lift the State Championship trophy. Setters are a key part of any team and here are a few who excelled in their duties.
Lexi Moody – Crawford – 2022
Many consider Lexi Moody to be the best setter in the division and that perception was strengthened after a 2020 season in which she guided Crawford to the State Championship final and was part of both the All-Tournament team and the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State first team. The 1,105 assists she registered in the season, to an average of 10.1 per set, are certainly eye-popping, but only indicate a part of the impact the 5’7” Moody has in the Lady Pirates’ game. She contributed in several other areas, most notably with 167 kills, 76 aces, 29 blocks and 257 digs. Her performance in the State Championship final, in which she had 36 assists, 13 digs and three blocks, was a good example of her production.
Ava Pointer – Iola – 2022
Ava Pointer’s talent was a key asset for Iola to secure the State Championship title in 2020. The 5’5” setter had a great group of hitters to work with and undeniably did a great job with her options, feeding each of them with the right amount of sets during the season. She came up big for the Bulldogs at the State Championship final, when she produced impressive 45 assists and nine digs to cement her selection as a Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State second-team member.
Morgan Marburger – Schulenburg – 2021
Morgan Marburger has a modern and efficient game that propelled Schulenburg to a solid campaign in 2020. At 5’8”, she’s tall enough to make an impact at the net and developed a great connection with the team’s leading scorer, opposite Erica Otto (see video below) which was extremely valuable for the Shorthorns. Also a talented basketball player, Marburger has a strong output for the team last season with 921 assists (8.1 per set), 89 kills, 48 aces, 20 blocks and 427 digs. That production earned her a spot at the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State third team.
