The champions have all been deservedly recognized, so now we’ll take some time to highlight the most intriguing prospects that stood out during the season with consistent and efficient play for their high schools.
During the next few days, we’ll analyze the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 2A Division, which saw Iola lift the State Championship trophy. In this article, we highlight some of the most promising blockers of the tournament.
Taylor Westerfeld – Middle-Blocker – Crawford – 2021
Taylor Westerfeld wore a lot of different hats for Crawford last season, when the team advanced all the way to the State Championship final. While it’s hard to discount her impact in the Lady Pirates’ offense as the team’s second-best scorer, perhaps her most important contributions came in the shape of the 65 blocks she registered in the season, half of the team’s entire production. A 5’9” middle-blocker, Westerfeld is very agile and active at the net. In her last year of high school volleyball, she was part of both the All-Tournament team and the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State first team.
Carleigh Judd –Middle-Blocker – Union Grove – 2021
Carleigh Judd’s presence at the net was certainly one of the highlights of Union Grove last season. The 5’10” middle-blocker was dominant during the entire season and ended the Lady Lions’ campaign with the impressive mark of 92 blocks registered, averaging nearly one per set. She had eight-point blocking performances as many as three times in the season and in two of them was the difference between win and loss against Troup. Her solid game took her to the All-State second team according to the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA).
Sarah Beth Cotter – Middle-Blocker – Albany – 2022
Sara Beth Cotter has the prototype of an ideal middle-blocker. At six-feet tall, she’s big enough to dominate the net, but also long and light-weighted enough to move quickly and reach spots with ease. Cotter, who’s also a talented basketball player for the Albany Lady Lions was rewarded with her inclusion at the Texas Sports Writers Association (TWSA) All-State first team on her junior season.
