Continue ReadingThe most important moment of the season is just around the corner for teams from the 15s, 16s and 17s age group from around the country as the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship will take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center from June 26-July 5.
As many as 728 teams are expected to compete in the 15 divisions for these three age groups and the state of Texas will, of course, be well-represented in the tournament with more than 50 teams expected to make the trip to Nevada.
During the next few weeks, we’ll use this space to present the Lone Star state representatives in the tournament, recapping their performances during the club season and highlighting some of their top prospects.
Madfrog 16’s N Green
Part of one of the strong clubs in Texas in Madfrog Volleyball, 16’s N Green will appear in the highly competitive 16 Open division in Las Vegas. The team led by head coach Matt Sipes features a great collection of talent and has performed as so in 2021, winning 39 of their 58 matches so far. The squad took the silver medal at the MLK tournament in January and had other strong finishes such as a fifth at the Texas President’s Day Invitational and a seventh at the Adidas Lone Star Classic.

Players to Watch
Harper Cooper Harper Cooper 5'9" | S Parish Episcopal | 2023 State TX – Outside Hitter/Setter/Right Sider – HS: Parish Episcopal – 2023
Harper Cooper Harper Cooper 5'9" | S Parish Episcopal | 2023 State TX is one of those players who would thrive in any position their coach put her in due to her great volleyball talent and her hard work rounding up her game at beach volleyball. She’s been mostly used as an outside hitter this season, where she can make the most of her impressive jumping ability and her fast and heavy arm to score points, but she’s also very good when setting. Her high school numbers with Parish Episcopal tell everything you need to know about her as the 5’9” Cooper has tallied 664 kills, 499 passes, 385 digs and 128 assists over two seasons. She ranks 12th on our 2023 Prep Dig State Rakings.
Lyric Berry – Middle Blocker – HS: Bishop Lynch – 2023
When watching Lyric Berry play, it’s impossible not to notice how impressive her physical tools are. Besides her 6’1” frame, Berry is also very athletic, moving well on the court, jumping high and further increasing her reach with her long arms. She’s a handful to deal with and is the rare type of middle blocker who keeps opposing blockers guessing and helps to free up the other team hitters at the pin. Berry already plays at a very high level but still has such a high ceiling. She’s listed as the 18th-best prospect at our 2023 Prep Dig State Rankings.
Blaire Bayless – Outside Hitter – HS: Plano West – 2023
Madfrog 16’s N Green’s Big Three is completed by Blaire Bayless, a 6’2” outside hitter who brings a lot to the table when it comes to helping the team. She’s obviously extremely well-versed at the net, combining her great size and impressive jumping ability with a hammer of a right arm and a well-polished technical game. Bayless uses her wrist really well to send the ball exactly where she wants and takes advantage of her long arms to put pressure on opposing hitters when blocking. She’s also one of the team’s top passers and can play defense as well as anyone.
