It will be exciting to see some well-known names establishing themselves even more in the Lone Star state volleyball scene and some new faces breaking through and quickly emerging to earn the spaces.
Between now and the start of the high school season, at the beginning of August, we’ll highlight some players we believe are worth your attention when teams get back on the gym. Today we enter the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 3A Division and the first thing we’ll do is listing some of the most promising setters.
Abby Sorenson – HS: Tatum – 2023
Abigail ‘Abby’ Sorenson did a tremendous job in leading Tatum last season as she helped the Lady Eagles go undefeated in their district with 12 wins in as many matches. An intelligent and efficient setter, Sorenson grew to a larger role in her second year of high school volleyball and was instrumental to the team’s successful season with 830 assists, 160 digs and 69 aces. She was selected to the All-State team by the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA).
Harley Kreck – HS: Rains – Club: Skyline Juniors – 2023
Harley Kreck is one of the most exciting prospects in the state of Texas as she committed to Baylor even before starting her high school career. A six-footer, Kreck typically splits her time between the setter and outside hitter position and plays lights out on both – a benefit of also spending time training and playing on the sand. Last season, she was huge for Rains, registering 334 assists, 306 kills, 278 digs and 71 aces for the Wildcats. Her tremendous potential was rewarded with an appearance at the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State team as an honorable mention and the district’s MVP award. She also made it to the USA Volleyball High Performance Indoor Rosters.
Raylee Poff – HS: Troy – Club: Waco Juniors – 2023
Raylee Poff is another class of 2023 setter who enjoyed a strong season in 2020 and will certainly come out even stronger and more experience when play starts. The 5’6” Poff is a joy to watch because of her great and quick hands and her tendency to play fast and crafty. She uses her middles a lot and even when setting her pin hitters up she tries to add some speed to the ball. Poff tallied 939 assists for Troy last season and has also helped on defense with 76 digs.
