Heading into regional matches this week, I wanted to write about some of the phenomenal setters making their way to the state tournament. There are so many great setters in Iowa and on the way to and at the state tournament is where they get to show their best stuff. Let’s look at who is leading things beginning their Regional playoffs.

Madeleine Miller (2023, S) is a 6’1" setter from Mount Vernon in the WaMaC - East Conference and is leading assists heading into regional play tonight. She has 947 assists giving her 9.0 APS, 1.6 KPS(170), 43 total blocks, 2.3 DPS(239), and a team-high 47 service aces with an efficiency of or 89.9%. Her favorite and best target this year is freshman Chloe Meester (2025, OH/MH), a 6’1" OH/MH with 3.5 KPS(368) and a .304 efficiency. Her second favorite target is Brooke Ellyson (2024, OH) with 1.8 KPS and a .218 efficiency. Miller is third in the kills department for her team who has a record so far this season of 31-12 and a conference record of 3-2. They play their first regional matchup tonight against Tama in a Class 3A - Region 5 Quarterfinal at Mount Vernon High School.

[player_tooltip player_id="132855" first="Carlee" last="Smith"] (2022, S/OH) from West Delaware in the WaMaC - East Conference is second on the list for this class handing out 936 assists so far this season giving her 9.3 APS, 94 kills with a .285 efficiency, 20 total blocks, 1.7 DPS(173), and 18 service aces with a 95.5% serve efficiency. Smith’s favorite target this season has been [player_tooltip player_id="79709" first="Alivia" last="Schulte"] (2023, OH) who has had 3.5 KPS with a .304 efficiency hitting off of Smith. West Delaware has an overall record this season of 37-5 with a conference-leading 4-1 record. The Hawks’s first regional matchup is against the Oelwein Huskies tonight in a Class 3A - Region 8 Quarterfinal at West Delaware High School.

Elle Greiner (2022, S) from Independence and the WaMaC - West Conference has put up 881 balls for her hitters this season giving her 9.5 APS, 52 kills with a .320% efficiency, 9 total blocks, 2.0 DPS(182), and a team-high 49 service aces with a 93.5% serve efficiency. Her favorite target this season has been Alexis Hearn (2022, OH) who has been hitting 3.1 KPS and Katie Henkes ( 2022, OH) who has been hitting 2.0 KPS. Greiner also has three other choices in hitters to set in Allison Kleve(2024, MH/RS) who has been hitting 1.6 KPS, Madyson Ristvedt (2023, MH/RS) also earning 1.6 KPS, and Marie Gorman (2024, RS/OH) also hitting 1.6 KPS. It takes a talented setter to be able to work with so many different hitters in one season. The Mustang’s overall record is 27-12 and their conference record is a respectable 4-2. Their first regional pairing is against Center Pointe-Urbana in a Class 3A - Region 7 Quarterfinal at Independence High School tonight.

Brooke Smith (2022, S/OH) of Spirit Lake and the Lakes Conference has put up 870 targets for her hitters so far this season giving her 9.0 APS, 1.3 KPS(126), 30 total blocks, 1.7 DPS(164), and 39 service aces with a 92.5% serve efficiency. The Indians have an overall record of 23-16 and a conference record of 4-1. Their first regional matchup is tonight against Estherville Lincoln Central in a Class 3A - Region 2 Quarterfinal at Spirit Lake High School.

[player_tooltip player_id="132902" first="Maddie" last="Hinkel"] (2022, S) is the last setter in Class 3A to round out the top 5 setters this season. She is from Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the Missouri River Conference. She has 829 assists so far this season giving her 10.6 APS, 1.6 KPS(125), 36 total blocks, 1.6 DPS(123), and 17 service aces with a 92.8% serve efficiency. Hitting most of the balls put up by Hinkel, is [player_tooltip player_id="132900" first="Emma" last="Salker"] (2022, MH) with 3.3 KPS and .362% efficiency, Alexa Trover (2023, OH) with 2.3 KPS and .235% efficiency, Isabelle Lenz (2022, OH) with 1.6 KPS and .241% efficiency, Makayla Grote (2022, OH) with 1.6 KPS and .185% efficiency, [player_tooltip player_id="132903" first="Addy" last="Mosier"] (2022, OH) with 1.5 KPS and .182% efficiency, and Kamea Van Kalsbeek (2024, MH) with 1.0 KPS and .429% efficiency. That is a huge list of hitters that are hitting over one kill per set. Hinkel is a great setter, has great parity, a great volleyball IQ, and is very difficult to play against. The Warriors have an overall record of 28-6 and a perfect conference record of 7-0 for the 2021 season. They beat Harlan in their Class 3A - Region 1 Quarterfinal tonight in Sergeant Bluff and will play Red Oak on Wednesday in Sergeant Bluff in a Class 3A - Region 1 Semifinal.
