The excitement of postseason volleyball in Nebraska deserves as much coverage as possible, so we’ll be breaking down all the happenings across the state as we approach a final championship bracket.
Next up on our recap series: Class D1 and D2!
Class D1
Let’s start with the stop seeds that defended their home court well.
Johnson-Brock looked incredibly sharp en route to claiming D1-1. They are part of a select group of teams that did not drop a set throughout sub-districts. Heartland, Nebraska Christian, Overton, and Cambridge accomplished the same feat.
Central Valley scored a hard-fought four-set win over defending D1 champion Pleasanton to win the D1-10 sub-district. Meanwhile, last year’s D1 runner-up, Archbishop Bergan, made a run from the three seed and defeated Mead to steal the D1-2 crown. You can always count on these upsets happening somewhere.
BDS put up a pair of solid performances and held their ground in D1-3. Howells-Dodge notched two four-set wins and cemented their status as a D1 frontrunner.
Other sub-districts were not nearly as routine. Things got wild in D1-8, as Plainview soared as the four seed in a five-team bracket. The Pirates won their opening-round matchup and then took down top-seeded Boyd County to advance to the finals. On the other side, three seed Creighton defeated Bloomfield in three sets and then conquered upset-minded Plainview to claim the sub-district.
Shelton needed two five-set victories to defend their home floor in D1-9. This five-set trend was also seen in D1-7, but it was third-seeded Hartington Cedar Catholic that stunned the field to win this bracket.
Class D2
All of Class D2’s sub-district champions came from either the #1 or #2 seed.
Let’s highlight the hosts that found success. Exeter-Milligan picked up two big sweeps to win D2-2, as did High Plains Community in D2-3 and Humphrey St. Francis in D2-4. Maywood-Hayes Center also carried their regular-season dominance into the postseason with two three-set wins in D2-8. Keep an eye on this quartet of teams moving forward.
Anselmo-Merna withstood a tough test from Ansley-Litchfield to claim the D2-7 title. Another surging Class D2 team, Wauneta-Palisade, showed some resiliency in a four-set win over Paxton in D2-9.
Some top seeds withstood a long grind before coming out on top in their sub-districts. Falls City Sacred Heart, one of the top D2 performers all year, survived a colossal five-set battle with perennial powerhouse Diller-Odell in D2-1. That sub-district wasn’t going to be easy for anyone. In D2-10, Arthur County put together back-to-back five-set wins to take the sub-district. Gotta love extra volleyball!
Class D2 was not without its upsets, either. Franklin stunned top-seeded Silver Lake in the opening round of D2-6 before falling to Lawrence-Nelson in a thrilling five-set finale. South Platte also won a tiebreaker to knock off host Garden County in D2-11.
Elsewhere, second-seeded Sioux County prevailed in sweep fashion to upend Minatare in D2-12. Wynot also looked like a surging two seed as they upset Stuart for the D2-5 crown. These upsets can happen anytime, and it helps highlight the postseason parity we see on a yearly basis.
What a time to be a volleyball fan.
