Statement Victories
Here are some quick hitters on the momentum-building wins we’ve already seen this week.
Diller-Odell picked up a big win over Class D1’s Johnson-Brock on Tuesday. The Griffins have now clawed their way into the top five in the D2 standings and clearly have intentions of defending their state title.
Grand Island Central Catholic kept up their winning ways with a 3-1 triumph over Columbus Scotus. This wasn’t the only big result in Class C1. Columbus Lakeview was victorious over Lutheran High Northeast on Tuesday, and Bishop Neumann found similar success against Norfolk Catholic. Lincoln Lutheran defended their top spot in the standings with wins against Aquinas and Nebraska City.
It was a busy midweek slate in Class A. Lincoln Southwest notched a grand total of five wins against Lincoln East, Fremont, Elkhorn North, Elkhorn, and Omaha Marian. That’s a productive few days of work for the Silver Hawks.
Another Star City squad that raised their stock is Lincoln Pius X. The Thunderbolts took care of business in sweeps over Kearney and cross-town foe Lincoln High. This dangerous team will try to inch forward in the Class A standings before season’s end.
In the realm of statement wins, Omaha Westside‘s 3-1 win over Waverly is one of the week’s biggest. The Warriors were looking for a win that would boost their late-season fortunes, and they’ve just found it.
In Class B, Elkhorn North is another team that had an eventful slate. The Wolves were dominant against Nebraska City and Omaha Gross Catholic and capped off the week with two more W’s against Elkhorn and Omaha Marian.
Five-Set Battles
These contests went the distance this week.
Logan View/Scribner-Snyder pulled out a back-and-forth battle with Ashland-Greenwood on Thursday. This match helps demonstrate how much parity we see in Nebraska high school volleyball on a weekly basis.
Elmwood-Murdock came back from down 2-1 defeat Palmyra in a 17-15 fifth set. It’s an important result for the Knights as they guard their good standing in the Class D1 wildcard race.
Norfolk emerged with two tiebreaker wins this week. After a narrow triumph against Lincoln High on Tuesday, the Panthers went the distance again on Thursday and picked up another win Columbus.
The five-set affairs continued into Friday. Hi-Line won a tough battle with Hitchcock county, and Wauneta-Palisade took a thrilling 19-17 tiebreaker against Wallace. There was clearly a lot of excitement around the state this week, but it’s really just another week in Nebraska.
