Don’t miss our previously published looks at outside hitters and middle blockers already slated to join us at the expo. Now, though, it’s time to check out some defensive specialists!
Brooklyn Miller Brooklyn Miller 5'5" | DS/L Xavier | 2023 State IA – 5’9 DS/L – Cedar Rapids Xavier – Class of 2023
It’s no surprise that this feature contains a lot of Iowa’s best teams, and Miller helps anchor the backcourt for perennial powerhouse Xavier. Her 300-dig total in 2021 only begins to tell the story of her impact. She is a solid passer with great technique, and both of those attributes should shine through on Saturday.
Ella Meyer Ella Meyer 5'5" | DS/L Western Dubuque | 2023 State IA – 5’4 DS/L – Western Dubuque – Class of 2023
Western Dubuque is a championship program with a championship-caliber libero. It’s that simple. Meyer racked up nearly 500 digs in her junior campaign with the Bobcats and continues to cement her standing as one of Iowa’s best defenders.
Kameron Brand – 5’9 DS/L – Mount Vernon – Class of 2023
Brand is another one of Iowa’s high-impact liberos who is poised to have a standout senior year. She helped her Mount Vernon team to a Class 3A state quarterfinal appearance and is equally effective for her Adrenaline club team. Her appearance at the Iowa expo should be a great step toward raising her stock even further.
Piper Frost Piper Frost 5'7" | DS/L Cedar Falls | 2023 State IA – 5’7 DS/L – Cedar Falls – Class of 2023
Cedar Falls has plenty of good defenders on their roster, and Frost is one to keep an eye on at this event. In fact, Cedar Falls will have representatives at a lot of other positions in Grimes, so it should be fun to see how all these Tigers perform.
Finley Schelhaas – 5’5 DS/L – Des Moines Christian – Class of 2024
This Des Moines Christian defensive specialist puts a lot of effort into everything she does. Her stout middle-back defense makes her an indispensable part of the Des Moines Christian backcourt, and she has the range to play anywhere else across the end line. Better yet, Schelhaas will only continue to develop her skills.
Rylee Scherder – 5’8 DS/L – Ballard – Class of 2024
Scherder has aspirations of being a backcourt player at the next level, but she also shows off a quick arm in the front row for Ballard. It’s always fun to watch six-rotation outside hitters develop into strong passers and defenders, and this might be another one of those cases.
Indy Johnson – 5’5 DS/L – Clarion-Goldfield-Dows – Class of 2025
We’ve made a habit of ending these features with a 2025 athlete, and we’re doing it again here. Johnson has been making waves since her first day with the Cowgirls program, and she can also take some swings along the net. Her journey is only just getting started.
