Your season could be on the line at 24-25, and you need to put the ball in play while also keeping it on the person your coach tells you to… pressure, intensity, control, and heart. It’s called the beauty of serving. Really, it’s the one time a player can just put a volleyball in their hands and immediately control the whole game. The best servers come with tons of practice in the gym, and that’s why I felt the need to highlight the top servers in the state.
Kailey Harris- The #1 server in the books from Pineville High School, Kailey Harris, finished the season with a total of 164 service aces which averaged 2.65 per set. Harris had the simplest serve in the books, a standing float, which literally means she just stood and hit the ball square. It’s not fancy or “cool” to watch, but the ability to drive the ball on a certain person while standing is completely underrated. If you watched Harris, she would focus on her serve and take her time when she went back to the service line. This was what made her standing float so special. Harris helped lead her team to a district runner up title and then lost in the first round of region but went out strong with a whopping 7 service aces! Kailey will be missed for Pineville High School!
Addison Maggard- Coming in on #27th in the state, Addison Maggard thrives behind the service line where she ended with 103 aces and averaged 1.23 aces per set. The best aspect about Maggard’s serve is how she can serve short and work change of pace with the passers. One of the hardest serves to receive is when that server has the skill to work the passer short and deep which is exactly what Maggard mastered this past year. Maggard definitely made waves for Knott County Central and will be missed on her squad!!
Katelin Aulick- A junior outside hitter from Pendleton County, Aulick finished 9th in the state with 98 service aces which averaged 1.42 aces a set. Aulick is a multi-sport athlete where she also excels in basketball, so it’s extremely fun to watch this baller in every aspect of the game. Of course her athleticism takes her far in other parts of the game, but Katelin just has a natural gift for serving. You can tell when she goes back to the service line, she is determined to put the ball in the right place, so she can also control the flow of the game. Aulick’s squad ended their season with a district runner-up title, and Katelin ended her junior campaign with 3 service aces in their final game against Campbell County in the first round of region.
Madison Baker- With a #11 finish in the state, Madison Baker from Hazard High School, killed it this year where she had a total of 112 service aces and averaged 1.40 a set! The most interesting part about Baker is she served a straight shutout where 19 of the 25 points were her service aces. This feat not only requires the ability to place the ball where you want, but she literally has to be able to put the ball in the court 25 points in a row. Baker was constantly a leader behind the service line which helped her team to a district runner-up title where Madison ended her career with 5 service aces.
