The level of play displayed in those events has certainly set the field for great competition during the next several months across the state of Texas.
One of the top tournaments held in the Houston area in the period was the Skyline Classic #1, which reunited 12 17s and eights 18s teams in the courts of the traditional Houston Skyline club on December 18.
PrepDig.com was closely following the action and will, over the next couple of weeks, provide reports on the most promising players competing in the event.
These liberos did their job really well in the 18 Division:
Laura Weatherford – Asics Willowbrook 18 Gold – HS: Cooper – 2022
A well-known libero in the class of 2022, Laura Weatherford showed again her excellent game in the tournament. Extremely technical and confident, the 5’5” libero operates as a true floor general for her Asics Willowbrook team and is a central piece in the team’s playing system. A Northwestern State commit, Weatherford cover a lot of court in serve-receiving and does a great job in covering her hitters on offense.
Nathalia Castillo – TAV Houston 18 Molten – HS: Jersey Village – 2023
After not seeing a lot of action during the high school season behind the excellent Gabby Mansfield with Jersey Village, Nathalia Castillo did a great job with her TAV Houston 18 Molten team in the event. The 5’5” libero is one of those players who quietly get the job done but are certainly noticed by those paying enough attention. She’s very quick and efficient on defense, generating multiple transition plays every set, and provides the team some important stability when passing. Castillo also brings value from the service line with a tough floater and when setting in transition.
Mazzie Hinsdale – Space City 181 Astros – HS: Ball – 2022
Mazzie Hinsdale has an interesting all-around game, which allows her to play the game in different positions. She’s spent time as a setter and right sider in the past, but has lined up as a libero for her Space City 181 Astros team in the tournament and showed some promising skills for the position, such as superior ball control, excellent passing and good consistency. Hinsdale also plays beach volleyball at a very good level.
