Continue ReadingThe club volleyball season had few, but quite exciting tournaments in the few weeks between the end of the high school calendar and the Holidays. The level of play displayed in those events has certainly set the field for great competition during the next several months across the state of Texas.
One of the top tournaments held in the Houston area in the period was the Skyline Classic #1, which reunited 12 17s and eights 18s teams in the courts of the traditional Houston Skyline club on December 18.
PrepDig.com was closely following the action and will, over the next couple of weeks, provide reports on the most promising players competing in the event.
These are the middle blockers that stood out in the 18s Division:
De’Mya Robinson – Fort Bend Jrs 18 Legacy – HS: Bellaire – 2022
De’Mya Robinson’s physical tools make of her a very interesting prospect to follow. As six-foot, she has great size for the game but complements that with great strength and very quick feet. Long and athletic, Robinson is an excellent blocker as she combines very good reading of the game with superior technique when placing her arms across the net to take space up from opposing hitters. Also capable of playing as a right sider, Robinson is also an efficient and versatile hitter because of her reach, but that’s an area of her game where there’s still considerable room for improvement. She was an integral part of a Fort Bend Jrs team that finished second in the gold bracket.
Mailyn Harris – Asics Willowbrook 18 Gold – HS: Cypress Creek – 2023
A class of 2023 prospect playing in a 18s team, Mailyn Harris was exactly where she belongs. The physical middle blocker was a key part of the Asics Willowbrook team that went to win it all last weekend without dropping a single set. A long-armed hitter, Harris is very explosive on her offense as the ability to hit in any direction. Her blocking game is also extremely solid due to her great understanding of the game and her quickness to move laterally at the net.
Shayna Longoria – TX Hurricane 18 Cat 5 – HS: Dickinson – 2022
Shayna Longoria was easily the most physical and explosive player in her Texas Hurricane team. Originally a middle blocker, she has a solid all-around game, which allows her to play in other positions, as was the case in the tournament, where she helped her team as an outside hitter. Standing at 5’11”, Longoria is very physical and can hit the ball hard, a skill her team explored as much as it could during the Skyline Classic #1. She’s also a very good blocker.
