The level of play displayed in those events has certainly set the field for great competition during the next several months across the state of Texas.
One of the top tournaments held in the Houston area in the period was the Skyline Classic #1, which reunited 12 17s and eights 18s teams in the courts of the traditional Houston Skyline club on December 18.
PrepDig.com was closely following the action and have, during the last couple of weeks, been providing reports on the most promising players competing in the event.
These outside hitters did a lot for their teams in the 18 Division:
Darian Lowden – TAV Houston 18 Molten – HS: Oak Ridge – 2022
An important player for her high school team Oak Ridge during the last season, Darian Lowden was even more pivotal to TAV Houston 18 Molten during the tournament. The 5’11” outside hitter was a reliable offensive option for her team and scored at a very good rate, either by hitting around the block or using it to put the ball down. She also does a great job in creating difficult situations to opponents when out-of-system. Lowden is also a very good defensive player as her quickness allows her to react really well on defense and her technique makes of her a very consistent passer.
Leah Fraysur – Asics Willowbrook 18 Gold – HS: Waller – 2022
Coming from a solid senior high school season with Waller, in which she produced north of 300 kills and digs, Leah Fraysur was one of the centerpieces of the Willowbrook team that dominated the division. The 5’10” outside hitter has a very complete game and helped the team in more than one way. Fraysur is very solid defensively but it’s her offensive game that shows how mature and ready for the next level she is as she does a great job in making smart decisions and using all of her tools to keep opponents guessing across the net. Also a very good server, Fraysur will continue in the area during her collegiate career as she committed to Houston Baptist.
Amiley Penson – Space City 181 Astros – HS: Hightower – 2022
Amiley Penson is a very versatile player, who does a great job in fulfilling her role with Space City 181 Astros. The 5’8” outside hitter is explosive on offense and also holds her own on the backcourt, providing good support in passing and defense. She’s also a very effective blocker.
