Continue ReadingThe club volleyball season had few, but quite exciting tournaments in the few weeks between the end of the high school calendar and the Holidays. The level of play displayed in those events has certainly set the field for great competition during the next several months across the state of Texas.
One of the top tournaments held in the Houston area in the period was the Skyline Classic #1, which reunited 12 17s and eights 18s teams in the courts of the traditional Houston Skyline club on December 18.
PrepDig.com was closely following the action and will, over the next couple of weeks, provide reports on the most promising players competing in the event.
These are some of the outside hitters who put on solid shifts in the 17 Division:
Sujeili Mermella – SA Lady Stangs 17-1 – HS: Antonian Prep – 2023
Sujeili Mermella was one of the most impressive players in the entire event. What set her apart are her ability to perform basically every skill at a very high level and her evident love for the game. It’s hard to label the 5’7” Mermella as a right sider because, yes, she does right from the right, but also does it from the middle, left and back row and sets in some rotations. A fantastic leaper, she’s a phenomenal pass/defense player and also has a very powerful top spin jump serve. And still plays beach volleyball at a very high level.
Kenzie Heffley – Texas Twisters 17 Royal – HS: Columbus – 2023
Kenzie Heffley was a bright spot in her Texas Twister team that won three and lost two matches in the tournament to finish seventh. A 5’9” prospect, she jumps well and has tremendous strength in both her lower and upper bodies. Heffley can hit the ball hard and is hard to stop when in rhythm, especially when she hits line. She also has some very nice complementary assets such as a technical and efficient block and very good ball control.
Madison Grekstas – TAV Houston 17 Molten – HS: Huntsville – 2023
It’s fair to say Madison Grekstas’ game is still a work in progress, but it’s also undeniable that she’s able to make a big impact in the game with the tools she has right now. Even though she could use a few more refinement in some areas of her game, Grekstas knows how to use her 6’1” frame and her long arms to dominate the net on both sides of the ball. She’s a big blocker on the right and can hit the ball straight down and put a lot of power on it when set the right way. With a little bit more of consistency, she has what it takes to be an impactful player at the club level – she already is for her high school team Huntsville, where she was the top offensive player with 374 kills this past season.
