Continue ReadingThe club volleyball season had few, but quite exciting tournaments in the few weeks between the end of the high school calendar and the Holidays. The level of play displayed in those events has certainly set the field for great competition during the next several months across the state of Texas.
One of the top tournaments held in the Houston area in the period was the Skyline Classic #1, which reunited 12 17s and eights 18s teams in the courts of the traditional Houston Skyline club on December 18.
PrepDig.com was closely following the action and have, during the last couple of weeks, been providing reports on the most promising players competing in the event.
In our final article about the event, we’ll highlight the setters that stood out in the 17 Division:
Madison Hess – LSE 17U – HS: Heights – 2023
A 6’2” setter who can fill a lot of holes is every coach’s dream and Liberty Stars Elite is fortunate to have Madison Hess. Her main duties with the team revolve around setting, an area of the game she’s excellent at due to her great technique and strong mental game – nothing seems to faze her on the court. Hess also helps her team with hitting and serving and she plays middle blocker in a couple of rotation to make the most of her great block. Her stats in the last high season with Heights – 661 assists, 115 kills and 171 digs – show how versatile and well-rounded she is.
Madalynn Briggs – Asics Willowbrook 17 Gold – HS: Tomball – 2023
Madalynn Briggs set Willowbrook 17 Gold to an absolutely dominant performance in the division with her steady and efficient game. The 5’9” setter likes to play fast, but distributes the ball with extreme intelligence and knows exactly when to take risks with her game – she is great in setting against the flow of play and in turning bad passes in hittable sets. Another interesting aspect of Briggs’ game is that seems to always be very relaxed on the court as rare are the occasions she doesn’t have a smile on her face.
Mckynzie Wallace – TAV Houston 17 Molten – HS: Kingwood Park – 2023
A 5’6” setter for TAV Houston 17 Molten, Mckynzie Wallace is one of those players who play bigger than their size. Very intelligent and consistent, she does a great job in diversifying the team’s offense while still maintaining a very high level of consistency when doing it. She plays the game with a lot of passion and helps in other areas, such as serving and defense.
