The level of play displayed in those events has certainly set the field for great competition during the next several months across the state of Texas.
One of the top tournaments held in the Houston area in the period was the Skyline Classic #1, which reunited 12 17s and eights 18s teams in the courts of the traditional Houston Skyline club on December 18.
PrepDig.com was closely following the action and will, over the next couple of weeks, provide reports on the most promising players competing in the event.
These are the setters who made the difference for their teams in the 18 Division:
Grace Krohn – Asics Willowbrook 18 Gold – HS: Cypress Creek – 2023
Grace Krohn led her Asics Willowbrook 18 Gold team to victory in the Skyline Classic with her fast-paced, smart offensive distribution. She runs a fast offense with her hitters, but is very consistent with her locations and smart with her choices. A six-footer, she’s an asset at the net and also on the backcourt, with her excellent defense and tough serve, which generated quite a few points for her team during the day. Krohn is fresh from a high school season with Cypress Creek in which she neared 1,000 assists, reaching 901 (to an average of 6.8 per set).
Julia Liang – Fort Bend Jrs 18 Legacy – HS: Fort Bend Clements – 2022
A very cerebral and intelligent setter, Julia Liang made great strides in improving her overall game over the last couple of years. Her hands have always been reliable and her ability to work with less-than-ideal passes were always there, but now the 5’7” Liang is also able to contribute in other areas of the game, most notably with her defensive, which is excellent. She’s a very intelligent player and that shows in the form of several smart decisions she make during the matches she plays at. She produced 919 assists (8.1 per set) for her Fort Bend Clements High School this past season.
Erin Mosel – KW Revolution 18 Elite – HS: Kingwood – 2023
A very versatile player who can set and hit at a very high level, Erin Mosel wore a lot of hats for her Kingwood Revolution 18 Elite team in the tournament. She was excellent in running the team’s offense while on the backcourt with her smart distribution and showed the ability to score at the net despite her 5’8” frame by consistently making good decisions. One of the most noticeable strengths of her game is her powerful top spin jump serve, which typically puts opponents in trouble.
