The Spike Sport #1 was one of the first of those to take place. Played on December 4 in Missouri City, the event featured eight teams from the Houston area in the 17 Division and ten in the 18. The event was dominated by the traditional Houston Skyline club, which advanced two teams for the final of the gold bracket in both divisions.
PrepDig.com attended the tournament and we’ll use the next few days to highlight some of the most interesting players we spotted there – some are very popular and well-known names, while others are prospects who perhaps were flying under-the-radar.
Here are some of the outside hitters who left a strong impression in the 17 Division.
Chloe Richards – Skyline 16 Royal – HS: Magnolia – 2024
A versatile six-footer, Chloe Richards spent the last high school season splitting time between setting and hitting duties with Magnolia. At the Spike Sport, she was used mostly at the pin and showed how good she can be there with a very complete game, leading Skyline 16 Royal to the title. Extremely long, Richards uses her size and reach extremely well on offense and complements her physical tools with the ability to hit from anywhere on the court and a high volleyball IQ that allows her to still be effective in broken plays. She’s also an extremely valuable on the backcourt due to her reliable passing and her dangerous serving.
Makenna Tryon – Skyline 17 Black – HS: Waller – 2023
A tall and athletic outside hitter with a ton of potential at the net, Makenna Tryon played a pivotal role in Skyline 17 Black’s offense on Saturday. Her potent offense brought a lot of safety to the team at the pin and Tryon responded well, looking unstoppable at times, especially when hitting crossbody shots. She can also score from the back row and does a good job in keeping her passes under control.
Addison Carter – Katy United 17 Molten – HS: Fulshear – 2023
During the last high school season, Addison Carter was tasked mostly with backcourt duties as part of her role as a defensive specialist. Playing defense is arguably one of the strengths of her game, and Katy United 17 Molten takes advantage of all the stability Carter’s game provides them, but she showed during the Spike Sport #1 that she can also be an effective player at the net due to her superior technique and understanding of the game.
