The tournament had two divisions, with 17s and 18s paired in a single event and the 16s playing in one of their own. We followed the 16s tournament and spent most of the Saturday in the Asics Willowbrook facility, where 24 of the 41 entered teams competed.
It was a great opportunity to spot young talent in the state of Texas and over the course of the week, we’ll present our findings here. In our second article, we’ll present some right siders who got the job done in the tournament.
Right Siders
Addison Lanning – Skyline 16 White – HS: Stratford – 2024
It doesn’t take long after watching Addison Lanning play to realize how much potential she has to thrive as a right sider. Her game is clearly still coming together, but she has all the tools to be a stud for her teams if she continues to work hard. Lanning is a six-footer and a lefty, a combination that typically works really well on the right. She’s very strong physically and has progressively been showing a better understanding of the game, something that translates into easy points at the net when she spots an overpass and an interesting ability to change pace on offense.
Ashley Jones – HOU Stars 16 Adidas – HS: Stratford – 2024
One of Lanning’s teammates during the high school season at Stratford, Ashley Jones also seems to have a bright future ahead of her if she continues to improve. Very long and athletic, she makes contact with a very high point and makes life difficult for opposing blockers trying to stop her. Jones has a very interesting skill for a player of her age and size, which is the ability to limit her mistakes to a very low amount. The next step in her improvement would be adding more physicality to her game, in order to both jump higher and hit the ball harder.
Raegan Rust – Renegades 16 Black – HS: Bridgeland – 2024
Raegan Rust spent the last high school season in the junior varsity squad of a loaded Bridgeland team, but if she keeps performing like she did this past weekend, her role should be considerably larger in the next one. Rust is very explosive and great in finding unlikely angles from the right, something she does even better when hitting a quick set behind the setter. She’s also a hard worker on the backcourt, helping the team on defense as well.
