The tournament had two divisions, with 17s and 18s paired in a single event and the 16s playing in one of their own. We followed the 16s tournament and spent most of the Saturday in the Asics Willowbrook facility, where 24 of the 41 entered teams competed.
It was a great opportunity to spot young talent in the state of Texas and over the course of the week, we’ll present our findings here. Now it’s time to know some of the setters who ran their team’s offenses extremely well.
Setters
Kira Braun – Woodlands Revolution 16 Premier – HS: Magnolia – 2024
Kira Braun might be young, but she plays with the confidence and the consistency of a veteran. The 5’9” setter does a great job in using all of her setters as she runs Woodlands Revolution 16 Premier’s offense in a simple, but extremely efficient way. Braun has a really strong upper body and that allows her to quickly put herself in a good position to set when out-of-system. She’s also a very good defender and server. Braun had limited playing time during the last high school season with Magnolia, appearing in just 45 sets, but had a tremendous impact with 421 assists (9.4 per set), 118 digs (2.6 per set) and nine aces.
McKinley Cole – Club South 16-1 – HS: Clear Springs – 2024
A 5’10” setter with great length and athleticism, McKinley Cole has the potential to develop into a great player. She’s very technical and her physical tools can set her apart from the other players in the position as she’s excellent with her blocking and a constant threat on setter dumps because of her reach. Cole also has a very high volleyball IQ as at the same time she knows exactly how to benefit from the height of her hitters, she also does a great job in putting them in a position to score when out-of-system.
Mackenzie Frazier – Asics Willowbrook 16 Gold – HS: Klein – 2024
Despite having spent part of the last high school season with Klein’s junior varsity team, Mackenzie Frazier did enough to earn an All-District Honorable Mention selection. Running Asics Willowbrook 16 Gold’s offense during the club season should give the setter the opportunity to further improve her game. Frazier has a very clean touch on the ball and good size for the position. She’s the type of setter that manages to run a fast-paced offense without sacrificing her accuracy and is very creative and crafty with both her distribution and her attempts to score on two.
