The two-day tournament will feature 97 teams playing across three club venues in the Houston area – Willowbrook, Houston Skyline and Woodlands Revolution.
The 16s teams will all play on Saturday while the 17s and 18s, which are paired in a single division, will see the court on Sunday. We are planning to cover the 16 Division in person and bring you our lists of reports the following week, so as we prepare for the event, we’re publishing some previews for the 17/18 Division over the week.
Our final recommendation ahead of the start of the tournament is Katy United 17 Adidas, a solid roster from the Katy United Volleyball Club from Katy.
Players to Watch:
Kaylie Victorian – Outside Hitter – HS: Lamar – 2023
Kaylie Victorian uses her athleticism to the best of her abilities to be a real force at the net. The 5’8” outside hitter is a phenomenal jumper and has one of the heaviest arms of the area, which she uses to score points at ease. She had an extremely prolific high school season with Lamar, in which she was arguably the team’s most important player, registering 194 kills, 144 digs and 337 passes.
Maddy Chaapel – Outside Hitter – HS: Katy – 2023
An up-and-coming outside hitter from the Houston area who made it to last year’s American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Phenom List, Maddy Chaapel did a good in earning significant playing time in a loaded Katy team during the last high school season and being one of the team captains. A six-footer, she uses her size and length really well to dominate the net and brings a lot of energy to her team’s offense. She puts a lot of power on her approach and transfers that momentum to the ball when she makes contact with it. Chaapel ended last season with 212 kills, 83 digs, 238 passes and 20 blocks to her name.
Kynzie Lilly – Libero – HS: Fort Bend Travis – 2023
Kynzie Lilly is the one who calls the shots on Katy United 17 Adidas’ backcourt. The 5’7” floor general brings all her energy and outstanding defensive skills to the table and does a great job in generating volume for the team. Lilly’s positioning and reading of the game are probably her main assets as a player as she rarely needs more than a couple of steps to get to the ball on defense. She is coming from a fantastic high school season with Fort Bend Travis, one in which she produced 388 digs, 527 passes and 23 aces.
