The tournament had two divisions, with 17s and 18s paired in a single event and the 16s playing in one of their own. We followed the 16s tournament and spent most of the Saturday in the Asics Willowbrook facility, where 24 of the 41 entered teams competed.
It was a great opportunity to spot young talent in the state of Texas and we’ve been presenting our findings here over the course of the week. There was only one 15s team competing in the 16s Division in Woodlands Revolution 15 Premier and as they showed a lot of talent and won all their matches in the event, we decided to dedicate a full article to them.
Woodlands Revolution 15 Premier – Players to Watch
Carly Paugh – Middle Blocker – HS: Willis – 2025
Carly Paugh barely looked like someone who was playing against older opponents. Very tall and long, the 6’1” middle blocker was able to make a big impact at the net for her team. It was obvious she was also very relaxed and calm on the court, something that’s not common to see in players of her age. Paugh’s big block is probably her main asset right now but she’s also a very good server and a reliable hitter. Also capable of playing as an outside hitter, she had a big freshman high school season with Willis, registering 201 kills, 81 blocks and 78 digs.
Payton Stroud – Setter/Right Sider – HS: The Woodlands – 2025
A left-handed setter with good size and a great understanding of the game, Payton Stroud did a great job in running Woodlands Revolution 15 Premier’s offense. The 5’7″ setter has outstanding body control and that helps her to be in the best possible position to set when the pass pulls her away from the net. Stroud, who refines her craft in the sand as well, is also very intelligent and earns ‘easy’ points because of that, scoring on smart serves or unexpected setter dumps. She’s also an above-average defender.
Haley Herndon – Outside Hitter – HS: Magnolia – 2025
A long and athletic outside hitter, Haley Herndon was probably Woodlands Revolution 15 Premier’s top offensive weapon in the tournament. The 5’11” outside hitter is extremely explosive and has a very high contact point, making it difficult to stop her at the net. At an early age, she has already developed a nice variety of shots. Passing might not be her strongest asset, but Herndon certainly holds her own and performs well enough in that area of the game to give her setter options. She produced 55 kills, 11 blocks, 47 digs and 48 passes with limited playing time in her freshman season with Magnolia.
