A week after the 18s and 16s divisions conducted Tournament 1, it was the 15s and 17s age groups going at it for their first tournament of the four-tournament schedule. Prep Dig was on hand for both Saturday and Sunday action. Below, we list six setters from the 17s that we witnessed.
Madison Maxwell, Legacy 17 Pyramid – A versatile player for Legacy, Maxwell sets back row and hits from the right front row. She’s an adequate hitter who can score but really shines when she’s setting. She has very nice hands and solid location. She can also move the ball around to her hitters so defenses can lock in on one spot.
Zoe Rachow Zoe Rachow 5'11" | S Otay Ranch | 2023 State #141 Nation CA , Coast 17-1 – A team like Coast has plenty of options and it’s Rachow who gets to handle them all. She sets a consistent ball and has a knack for knowing when to ride the hot hand. She’s also a capable defender who can help keep rallies alive.
Kahea Carvalho, Seal Beach 17 Black – Seal Beach doesn’t have the depth and weapons as some other teams it faces but Carvalho plays her role well in trying to help Seal Beach keep pace. She gives her attackers hittable balls and while Seal Beach doesn’t always run tempo she’s able to speed up her sets at times to run a fast attack.
Shannelle Puetz, Wave 17 Julianna – Wave can switch between a 5-1 and a 6-2 but that doesn’t stop Puetz from showing what she can do. When the pass is there she can deliver anywhere and set up her hitters for success, be it deceptive back sets or quick sets to the middle. She also has good timing on her blocking when playing front row and can help slow down the opposing outside.
Fatimah Hall, Mizuno Long Beach 17 Rockstar – Hall is another two-way player in that she sets and hits for Mizuno. She’s a physical attacker on the right yet she’s at her best when directing the offense. She has great hands with a soft delivery and puts the ball consistently in the window for her hitters to do something with it.
Nicole Feliciano Nicole Feliciano 5'10" | S Aliso Niguel | 2023 State CA , Tstreet 17 Naseri – Another setter/right side, Feliciano does a lot for Tstreet. Like the other setter/right sides mentioned, Feliciano is best when setting as she can ride the hot hand but is also able to mix in her hitters when necessary.
