The 18s and 16s age groups gathered Saturday and Sunday for Tournament 1 at the CLAVA facility in Lake Forest. We were able to make it there for Day 1 action and witnessed both age groups go at it. Below, we list six right sides who caught our eye and why.
Avry Tatum Avry Tatum 6'3" | RS La Costa Canyon | 2022 #112 Nation CA , Sr RS, Wave 18 Kevin – As a right side, Tatum plays all the way around for Wave and for good reason. She’s able to hold her own defensively and can pick up the shots that come her way when playing back row. She’s also a physical attacker who Wave looks for when she gets to the front row.
Bella Rittenberg Bella Rittenberg 5'11" | RS Chaparral | 2023 State CA , Jr RS, Coast 18-1 – Playing up an age group, Coast likes to get Rittenberg involved in the offense. She’s a physical attacker who can blow up the block and will also work to make herself available to set.
Laura Williams Laura Williams 5'11" | OH Lakewood | 2022 #22 Nation CA , Sr RS, Mizuno Long Beach 18 Rockstar – Long Beach certainly has some pieces it can go to and Williams and her explosiveness is one of them. She gives Beach a good option when she’s in the front row as she’ll get set on both pins and knows what to do with the ball when she gets it.
Bridget Brady, Sr RS, Sunshine 18 Westside – Brady made her presence known when she subbed in the front row. The lefty was called upon frequently, attacking both down the line and cross court with her strong swing.
Haley Clark Haley Clark 5'11" | RS La Canada | 2024 State #177 Nation CA , Soph RS, SG Elite 16 Rosh – With a setter that can move it around, the ball will find its way to the right side and Clark showed is able to help carry some of the offense. She has a smooth swing and was successful attacking cross court.
Kimi Watanabe-Mayhew, Soph RS, City Volleyball 16 Gold – The offense changes for City when Watanabe-Mayhew checks in across the front row. She looks for her spots to let loose plus she’s able to hit over the block at times.
