Today, we take a look at the 2023 setters who are available, and those who are not. A blend of uncommitted and committed athletes. Many of these setters will be playing around the country over Presidents Day weekend and are ones to have on your radar as a college coach.
Available Setters
Mallory Dills – Munciana (IN)
Coming from Munciana who has a long line of setters who have gone on to great success at the collegiate level, Dills is one to have on the radar where she has all the skill and intangibles of a high level setter. She is long, athletic, and can run the floor. I was able to see her live this high school season for Cathedral out of Indianapolis and she showed how she connected well with her middles and could remain neutral with her hands and feet no matter where the ball was going. She is playing up an age group on the Munciana 18 Quora squad.
Madelyn Norton – Six Pack (IA)
Norton has been part of a powerhouse program in Iowa with Dike-New Hartford where they were one of the top high school teams in the Midwest. She is long, athletic, and can even swing on the right side. She is fine tuned with her all around skills where she can defend her position and provides a solid block. Another attribute is her left handed swing where she can turn and send it to the deep corner to score points on her own.
Margo Hernandez – REV (IN)
I was able to see Hernandez live at Central Zone and was extremely impressed with her all around athleticism and how she ran the court for her squad. Her Rev 17 Raptors squad is super gritty and Hernandez is right in the mix of those who just find a way to get it done. She plays hard, yet is under control where she can put it on the money for her attackers. This is definitely one to star in UA because she will definitely be a key contributor at the next level.
Miller McDonald – MadFrog (TX)
MadFrog 17 Green will be one of the more physical teams at the 17s level and McDonald is the one to put the ball in the window of plenty of high powered attackers. She is extremely well trained and disciplined. Seeing her footwork and how she is able to adjust is high level. All good setters can put it on the money when the pass is perfect, but McDonald can run her middles when she is pulled off the net and can get her hitters a ball on the money when its a scramble situation.
Maggie Duyos – Sky High (IL)
Duyos is another one of those gritty setters who isn’t afraid to go head to head at the net. She might not be the biggest front line player, but she is one who is going to fight on your side of the net. I’ve seen Duyos play at the high school level and well as club and she is going to be extremely consistent. She defends her position well and she is going to get her hands on the ball wherever it is on the court. I also like how she knows when to push the tempo and when to feed her big outsides in Campbell Paris (South Carolina) and Chelsea Williams (Miami OH).
Elena Dragani – Milwaukee Sting (WI)
I’ve seen Dragani play since she first came on to the radar as a Freshman and she continues to improve each time she gets on the court. This year she is on Sting’s top team and is running the show with Zoe Behrendt (North Carolina) so Behrendt can swing on the right side as well. Dragani is extremely smooth where her release gives her hitters a beach ball to hit, their opportunity to terminate increases when Dragani is on the floor (as well as Behrendt). Sting was just named to a power pool at Triple Crown and will be fun to see this team go against some of the best.
Who Is Not Available?
Lexi Thatcher – Academy (IN)
Committed to Samford
I saw Thatcher at the beginning of her 16s years and I saw a lot of potential with her length, athleticism, and fundamentals. However, as I continued to watch her during her 16s season and even at Central Zone two weeks ago, she has blossomed into a setter who can run the court and be a real leader. She is heading to Samford in Alabama which is part of Southern Conference and always in the hunt for an NCAA Tournament berth. Huge pick up for them and great fit for Thatcher.
Logan Jones – MAVS (KC)
Committed to Arkansas
Jones put on an absolute show at the NLQ 16s Qualifier last spring and has continued to pick up momentum over the summer and even into this club season. She committed to Arkansas where they have found success recruiting the Kansas City area. Jones is a smash mouth setter where she plays with a major fire and it’s contagious among her teammates at MAVS. She is going to set pin to pin and then find an opening for herself when needed. Jones doesn’t need any metrics attached to her name – she just knows how to win.
Avery Van Hook – Iowa Rockets
Committed to South Dakota
South Dakota continues to pick up top notch Iowa athletes and Van Hook is right up there. She might be the most efficient and effective player in the Class of 2023 with everything she can do. She is lefty handed who can be offensive in the front row, hit on the right side, and has an overall skill set that is really tough to compete with. She plays with a fire and passion that is worth points alone. She will absolutely will her team to win. Give her a challenge and she will find a way to get it done.
Juliette Myrick – Rockford Thunder (MO)
Committed to Army
Myrick was one I was able to see live quite a bit last year and what is a little different about her style of play is her quiet confidence and demeanor on the court. She is going to be consistent, keeping it simple, and will out execute the other side of the net. She also brings some size and length to the front row where she can be a point scorer as well.
