That made of the AAU Houston Grand Prix an excellent place to watch and spot some of the most talented, under-the-radar prospects in the region. The two-day event featured seven age divisions and nearly 170 teams competing in three different venues in the area.
We decided to focus on the 15s and spent Saturday afternoon at the Texas Tornados club, in Cypress, where 22 of the 30 teams in the division were in action. We’re highlighting the most impressive players we spotted during the day over the week, and the amazing liberos will have their space in today’s piece.
Lane Binkley – Katy United 15 Navy – 2025
Lane Binkley was a solid defensive piece for Katy United 15 Navy during the day. With her excellent positioning, the libero touches as many balls as anyone on the backcourt and does a great job in tracking the play and being in position to keep the ball in play. She’s also very consistent with her passing and a very good server. One of the things that certainly help Binkley have such a high level of consistency is her calm and focused mentality.
Hannah Loest – TEXSTAR 15 – HS: Victoria West – 2025
A very mobile and intelligent player on the defensive court, Hannah Loest provided some much-needed stability to TEXSTAR 15 in the tournament. Her technique is excellent and Loest is one of those players who are always in the middle of the action, something highly desirable for a libero. She helped the team play fast in transition with her pinpoint defense and did a great job in setting when she had to. Loest stands at 5’8” and can also play as an outside hitter, something she frequently did in her freshman high school season with Victoria West.
Tobie Newsom – TAV Houston 15 Royal – HS: New Caney – 2025
One of the best passers in the entire tournament, Tobie Newsom play a pivotal role for her TAV Houston 15 Royal team. The 5’6” defensive star not only passed dimes all day, but also covered for teammates when they were in trouble. Newsom is electric on the backcourt and is always communicating with her teammates and suggesting defensive adjustments.
