This year’s location for the 18s tournament, which served as a qualifier for the 2022 USAV Girls 18s Junior National Championship, was the Austin Convention Center and it attracted as many as 178 teams, including several from other states, across its four divisions.
The teams from the Lone Star State were among the top performers in the tournament, finishing first in all four divisions, and over the next days, we’ll honor their campaigns, featuring the top two finishers of each division in specific articles.
We start with the winners of the 18 American Division:
CC Force 181 Crossfire
The team from the Corpus Christi Force Volleyball Club was the last standing in the brutal 78-team 18 American Division. CC Force 181 Crossfire did that with an incredible undefeated campaign of ten wins and just two sets dropped along the way.
Key Players
Cameron Pesek Cameron Pesek 6'2" | RS Shiner St. Paul | 2022 State TX – Right Sider – HS: Shiner St. Paul Catholic – 2022
A towering 6’2” right sider, Cameron Pesek Cameron Pesek 6'2" | RS Shiner St. Paul | 2022 State TX is more than used to carrying her team’s offensive load. With tremendous reach and a heavy, yet very skilled left arm, she has enough variety on her offensive game to either hit around blockers or simply overpower them. Pesek has developed a very interesting all-around game over the years, part of it by playing beach volleyball as well, and is an outstanding blocker, often putting opposing outside hitters in trouble at the net. She was honored as an All-State first-team member last season with her Texas Association of Parochial and Private High Schools (TAPPS) high school team St. Paul Catholic is set to continue playing at the collegiate level for Mary Hardin-Baylor. Pesek ranks 47th in our 2022 Prep Dig State Rankings.
Sydney Kuzma – Outside Hitter – HS: Gregory-Portland – 2022
A technical and physical outside hitter who fills the stats sheet out every time she steps on the court, Sydney Kuzma is one of the pillars of CC Force 181 Crossfire. Kuzma’s main asset as a player is her ability to do a lot of different things well and that was truer than ever in the last high school season, when she took Gregory-Portland to the playoffs after producing 563 kills, 42 aces, 26 blocks, 595 digs and 467 passes. Her offensive is surprisingly efficient and prolific for a 5’9” player but her good jumping ability and excellent wrist help explain that.
Jeri Ficklen – Middle Blocker – HS: Cuero – 2022
Jeri Ficklen is another player of this CC Force 181 Crossfire team that knows how to make her presence felt at the net. That shouldn’t be difficult for a middle blocker standing at 6’2” but Ficklen takes it to the next level with her excellent two-way game. She can be unstoppable on offense because of her ability to hit the ball hard and to have a great shot selection and her blocking is also truly impressive with an amazing combination of length, mobility and reading of the game. An expert in the slide hit, she will remain in the Lone Star State for her college career after she committed to Texas A&M – Kingsville.
