A week after the 18s and 16s divisions conducted Tournament 1, it was the 15s and 17s age groups going at it for their first tournament of the four-tournament schedule. Prep Dig was on hand for both Saturday and Sunday action. Below, we list six defenders from the 17s that we witnessed.
Sydney Bold Sydney Bold 5'7" | DS/L Bishops | 2023 State #166 Nation CA , Coast 17-1 – Bold gives Coast a defensive anchor every team craves. She’s reliable in serve receive and digging. She has a great court coverage and range. She also has a well-placed short serve to attack teams with from the line.
Saylor Little, Sunshine 17 LA – Sunshine teams are typically known for their defense and Little definitely fills that role when she’s in at the libero position. She has sharp ball control skills. She also seems to read well and cover the court adequately.
Katerina Lutz Katerina Lutz 5'5" | DS/L Torrey Pines | 2023 State CA , Wave 17 Julianna – One of Wave’s strengths comes in the back row with their defense and Lutz is half of that equation. Suiting up at libero or as a defensive specialist, she can make all the plays that come her way.
Koko Kirsch Koko Kirsch 5'8" | DS/L El Toro | 2023 State #168 Nation CA , Wave 17 Julianna – Kirsch fills out the strong defensive back row for Wave. Her ball skills are exceptional as she rarely misses a pass or dig. She’s also active in her coverage and able to make digs others wouldn’t be able to.
Brooklyn Yelland Brooklyn Yelland 5'8" | OH Laguna Beach | 2023 State CA , Coast 17-1 – There’s a reason Coast and Wave are above the rest of the 17s field and it has to with such strong defenders. Yelland fills a defensive specialist spot in the back row and is a smooth customer. She has a strong platform that allows her to deliver realiable and consistent passes to the setter.
Makena Lim, A4 Volley 17 Joaco – Lim knows how to dig the ball and keep the rally going. She’s also a big part of A4’s serve reception. At times, she can pass almost half the court.
