The two-day tournament was the second of the season for the 18s and 16s, which features 12 of the top teams in So Cal in each division. It was an incredible weekend for SCVC 16 Roxy, which went 7-0 and won the 16s division with victories that included beating Coast 16-1 in pool play and Wave 16 Brennan in Sunday’s playoff final. Below, we list 5 of the top L/DS we saw from the 16s divisions as we tried to focus on players who weren’t already mentioned from the first tourney from two weeks ago.
Sophia Meyer, Coast 16-1 – When Coast is clicking, it’s easy to get caught up in its offensive proficiency but Meyer does a great job anchoring the team’s defense. She doesn’t get challenged in serve receive often and there’s a reason for that. She’s also not afraid to hit the floor to keep a point alive.
Taylor Mercado, Mizuno Long Beach 16 Rockstar – Beach alters its liberos throughout the day and weekend with Mercado playing that position or DS. She’s very quick and can make up ground fast. It helps her cover well in addition to making some nice saves on the weekend.
Tessa Hurley, Seal Beach 16 Black – Hurley helps set the defensive tone for Seal Beach. She plays with lots of energy and works hard. She’s a sound passer and makes many plays look routine.
Malyssa Cawa Malyssa Cawa 5'7" | DS/L Mater Dei | 2024 State CA , Mizuno Long Beach 16 Rockstar – Cawa is another part of the Beach L/DS rotation. She’s steady in what she does, be it serve receive or defending she makes the play many more times than not.
Taylor Deckert, SCVC 16 Roxy – SCVC is one of the best ball control teams in the division and Deckert is no exception to that. She’s scrappy and is really solid in serve receive when teams dare to serve her. She’s also adept at picking up the cross court attack.
