Continue ReadingThe Premier Volleyball League continued on out of the CLAVA facility in Lake Forest over the weekend. The two-day tournament was the second of the season for the 18s and 16s, which features 12 of the top teams in So Cal in each division. We’ve mentioned the stars we saw from hitters, to middles, to setters and liberos/DS already as we focused on players we didn’t mention during the first weekend of action. Now, we bring the Super Squad featuring what we believe would be the top lineup from the second weekend of play. Check it out below.
Taylor Yu Taylor Yu 6'0" | S Temple City | 2024 State #15 Nation CA , S/RS, San Gabriel Elite 16 Rosh – There’s a reason Yu hits and sets for SG and it’s because she’s the best attacker and setter on the roster. No one looks smoother or sets a better ball consistently than she does and she’s extremely smart in how she runs the offense. As a hitter, she’s strong and powerful and sees the court very well.
Charlie Fuerbringer Charlie Fuerbringer 5'11" | S Mira Costa | 2024 State #2 Nation CA , S/RS, Mizuno Long Beach 16 Rockstar – There’s an elevated IQ to Fuerbringer’s game whether she’s setting or hitting. She moves very well and can jump set like few in the division can. She can make any set with great location as well. As a hitter, she has plenty of tricks in her bag. She jumps well which allows her to hit with power or fool the defense with touch shots.
Jaidyn Jager, OH, Coast 16-1 – A freshman playing up it would be hard to know it by just watching Jager do her thing. She’s got it all and has a knack for scoring as good as anybody in the division. She can get up and bang it down or off speed it when defenders are dug in. She can go down the line or cross court so it’s hard to zero in on what she’s going to do, plus she’s a very capable passer and defender.
Babi Gubbins Babi Gubbins 6'3" | OH Mater Dei | 2024 State #18 Nation CA , OH, Mizuno Long Beach 16 Rockstar – In terms of front and back row attacking, Gubbins can score as consistently as anyone either way. She’s also capable of tossing a variety of shots at the defense and is a heady attacker who can tool double blocks posted up in front of her.
Jenna Hanes Jenna Hanes 6'3" | MB Cathedral Catholic | 2024 State #76 Nation CA , MB, Wave 16 Brennan – Hanes plays the position with an ease about her. It’s not to say she’s not exerting herself, it just that she makes it look pretty easy when she’s doing her things. Her length is a problem whether she’s blocking or attacking and she’s a definite game changer when she plays across the front row.
MacKenzie Parsons MacKenzie Parsons 6'2" | MB Poway | 2024 State #189 Nation CA , MB, Coast 16-1 – It’s very difficult to slow Parsons when she’s on the attack and if the pass is there Coast is going to look for her as often as possible. She’s a physical attacker capable of blasting balls down with authority as well as a capable blocker.
Maya Evens, L, Wave 16 Brennan – Evens is the only member of the team we didn’t write about after the first weekend of PVL. She’s as smooth as they come in the division with the ability to make difficult plays look routine. Teams shy away from serving her and her court coverage is excellent.
