Continue ReadingThe Platinum tournament is the best of the best in Oregon and Washington, competing for the #1 seed in the Pacific Northwest. The Puget Sound region and the Columbia Empire region each send their top four 16U and top four 18U teams to compete, so a total of eight teams in each age bracket. First playing in a pool and then in a small bracket, one team will come out on top. One team from each age bracket will drop down, allowing for one team to move up and compete. There will be a few more Platinum tournaments taking place later on that we will be covering as well.
In the 18U age bracket the teams in attendance were: NPJ 18-1 Forefront (CE), OJVA 18-1 Gold (CE), OJVA 17-1 Gold (CE), Webfoor 18-1 Brian (CE), SIVBC 18-1 Tsunami (PS), SIVBC 17-1 Storm (PS), Dakine 17 Surf (PS), and Dakine 18-1 Surf (PS).
All teams competed and great volleyball was played. To recap the tournament, we will be highlighting some standout players in their respective position and class.
OREGON ——————
Elle Bruegman Elle Bruegman 5'8" | DS/L Sheldon | 2023 State OR , 5’8”, DS, Sheldon High School, Webfoot 18-1 Brian

Bruegman has shown steady improvement over the past year, getting to compete at a high level for high school, club, and sand ball. For the Webfoot 18-1 Brian team, they have relied on her to control the back row as their primary libero. Bruegman is a vocal leader when on the floor, and she does an exceptional job constantly communicating what she sees. She commands the backrow and is a definite leader on the floor.
Bruegman is a two-year varsity starter for Sheldon High School. This past season she was their primary libero and was critical in their 10-1 league record, finishing first in the Southwest Conference. She was awarded Southwest First Team All-League.
Bruegman is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2023.
Elsa Mcdermott Elsa Mcdermott 5'7" | DS/L Catlin Gabel | 2023 State #180 Nation OR , 5’8”, DS, Catlin Gabel School, OJVA 17-1 Gold

McDermott has been a vital part of this OJVA squad’s back row since their 15U season. She has helped the team reach an elite level, currently sitting at #10 in the Nation for 17U clubs across the country. with her consistent ball control, McDermott is continuing to sport the libero jersey for the OJVA 17-1 team. It is clear there is a level of trust her teammates have in her to get the job done. She is incredibly consistent and disciplined in both serve receive and defense.
McDermott is a three-year varsity starter for Catlin Gabel School. For the Eagles, she is actually their 6-rotation outside attacker. This past season she was awarded Lewis and Clark First Team All-League and 3A First Team All-State.
McDermott is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2023.
WASHINGTON ——————
Allison Bush, 5’7”, DS, Lakeside High School, Sudden Impact 17-1

Bush, alongside Kayci Spray Kayci Spray 5'5" | OH Newport | 2023 State WA , makes up the defensive backbone for the Sudden Impact 17-1 team. She is a defensive machine with an insanely fast reaction time, keeping the unthinkable alive. For Sudden Impact she and Spray were both seen sporting the libero jersey at the Platinum tournament.
Bush is a three-year Varsity starter for the Lakeside High School Lions. This past season she was the starting libero for the Lions and her back-row play was critical in the team’s metro and district championship. Bush was awarded Mountain Second Team All-League.
Bush is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2023.
Mackenzie Bravo Woo, 5’5”, DS, Interlake High School, Dakine 18 Surf

Bravo Woo is one of two non-2022 athletes on this high-level team of top Washington 2022 recruits. For the Platinum tournament, she did not suit up as the starting libero but saw significant playing time as a defensive specialist for the team. She brings a lot of athleticism and speed to the back row while staying controlled and consistent.
Bravo Woo is a three-year varsity starter for the Interlake High School Saints. She was the team’s starting libero this past season. She helped them finish 2nd in KingCo 3A and 9th in the 3A WAIA State tournament.
Bravo Woo is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2023.
Sydne Humphrey, 5’8”, S/DS, Dakine 17 Surf
With both defensive specialists out for Dakine 17 Surf, the team relied on Humphrey to step into this new role. Having been trained as a setter thus far, she stepped into the libero position with ease. Humphrey showcased her versatility and ability to excel in unfamiliar territory.
Humphrey is currently not committed to a school for the fall of 2023.
