Among the hundreds of teams heading to the Salt Palace Convention Center to start competing on Friday, there are, of course, several from Washington and we will use the time between now and them to feature some of them.
We decided to focus on the divisions of the 16s age group, which will have nine teams from the Evergreen State in action. As we had already highlighted some of those teams in previous articles, we’ll now bring some light to the ones that are yet to appear on our site in 2022.
SIVBC 16 Tornado
The team from the Sudden Impact Volleyball Club of Bellevue will compete in the 16 American division. 16 Tornado has won 15 and lost 11 matches so far in the season and celebrated a second-place finish at the President’s Challenge.
Players to Watch
Melena Wong – Setter/Right Side – HS: Mercer Island – 2024
Melena Wong does a great job with the ball in her hands and, at 5’9”, is certainly no liability at the net. The SIVBC 16 Tornado’s setter is among the most promising players in her age group in her position in the state because of her great technique and ability to work with imperfect passes. Wong is also a great server and can hit from the right if needed as well. She was the starting setter for her high school team Mercer Island last season, producing 268 assists, 57 digs and 23 aces.
Joslyn Greff – Outside Hitter – HS: Cedar Park Christian – 2024
A 5’9” outside hitter with great all-around skills, Joslyn Greff is one of the rocks in 16 Tornado’s playing system. A prospect who can pass, play defense and hit from the net or the backcourt, she has tremendous value to the team. Greff has a very diversified offense and is very effective from the left, right or back. In two high school seasons with Cedar Park Christian, she has amassed 196 kills, 129 digs, 247 passes and 38 aces.
Josie Barber – Middle Blocker – HS: Mercer Island – 2023
A teammate of Wong in their high school team Mercer Island, Josie Barber brings the chemistry with her setter to play also at the club level. A six-footer, she has a good presence at the net, especially when it comes to blocking. Her offense is still coming together, but she’ll have it at a good level when she’s able to add more power to it.
