With a number of D1 commitments already locked in, it’s worth giving some focus to players who aren’t quite getting the same recognition, but probably should.
Here’s five players that can be an asset at the college level that scouts should be keeping an eye on.
Kennedy Hudson Kennedy Hudson 5'5" | DS/L Lakeland | 2023 State MI , DS/L Lakeland/L2
Hudson plays with a lot of determination and a desire to truly be great. Her hard-nosed approach to the position is what you look for in a libero. She’s up to the challenge of facing the strongest attacks and keep coming back for more. Her passion carries over in leadership as well, as she’s vocal on the court and able to help direct traffic during a point.
Meredith Simmons Meredith Simmons 5'10" | OH Rockford | 2023 State MI , OH Rockford/MVA
Simmons is part of some impressive hitting squads with Rockford and MVA, so sometimes she can get lost in the shuffle. But, you can definitely see the improvement in her game year-to-year, especially defensively. Her ceiling remains high, as she’s got a long wing span and a lot of lift on her jump. As she continues to find more consistency in her finishing, she can be a big addition to a college program.
Margo Sudzina Margo Sudzina 5'6" | S Notre Dame Prep | 2023 State MI , S Notre Dame Prep/Michigan Elite
Sudzina was definitely an unsung hero for the NDP state championship squad this fall. The Irish were so loaded with talent, but Sudzina had to step up throughout the season due to injuries on the squad. She battled through injuries of her own, but always played with a high level of consistency. Sudzina sets a smooth ball and is able to play a very fast tempo on offense. Her serve is also very challenging for opponents to deal with.
Rachel Townsend Rachel Townsend 5'10" | OH Oxford | 2023 State MI , OH Oxford/Unified
Townsend comes from a very athletic family that knows what it takes to make it to the D1 college level. She brings that same explosiveness to her play on the volleyball court. Townsend was the primary hitter for Oxford in a competitive OAA conference and held her own. She’s got the velocity on her attacks to finish points, but also has the quick reaction time needed to succeed defensively.
Rachel Zurek Rachel Zurek 6'0" | MB Lakeland | 2023 State MI , MH Lakeland/Legacy
Zurek’s name may not get mentioned with some of the other outstanding middles in this class, but it should. She’s got all the tools to be a big asset at the next level. Standing 6’1”, Zurek has great length that is complimented by a lot of athleticism and skilled footwork. She’s shown the ability to play the pins and be a dominant force in the middle.
