These events drew several top teams from Texas away from the Lone Star State for the weekend, which gave us to watch some teams that normally fly under-the-radar in action in the tournaments that were going on in the Houston area.
Our choice was the Spike Sport #6, which reunited 11 teams from the 17s age group for a single day of competition in Missouri City. We’re highlighting the players that stood out over the course of the week and in this time we’ll feature the right sides that made a difference for their teams.
Kirstyn Montgomery – TX Legacy 17 National – HS: The Woodlands Cristian Academy – 2023
A long and athletic lefty with tons of potential, Kirstyn Montgomery was one of the offensive references of her TX Legacy 17 National team. Her high point of contact and her ability to find good angles made of her a productive scorer for her team. Montgomery has a very interesting ability to hit either quick or higher sets and can be explosive at times. She’s also a good blocker and a capable server.
Marin Higginbotham – H Skyline 17 White – HS: Belville – 2023
Marin Higginbotham split time between both sides of the net and was more prolific when hitting from the right. The 5’10” prospect is very athletic and added a lot with her ability to hit different sets and her explosiveness. Higginbotham proved especially efficient when hitting combination plays and could also help her team with serve receive.
Aleria Lane – AVA TX 17 Power – HS: King – 2023
Another versatile player who can play on either side of the net, Aleria Lane was one of the pillars of her AVA TX 17 Power team. She stands at 5’11” and is extremely long and athletic, providing a solid presence at the net on both sides of the ball for her team. Lane has outstanding physical tools and is mature enough to use them well as she does an excellent job in targeting the final feet of the court when hitting over the top of the opposing blocker. She’s also an excellent blocker herself.
Morgan Gray – TX Vision 17 – 2023
Morgan Gray helped her TX Vision 17 team with her tremendous versatility. She split her time between hitting and setting duties with the team and did well in both roles because of her great all-around game. Gray was very effective when she needed to side out on the right and also showed to be a very good blocker.
Abigail Foller – TX Legacy 17 Black – 2023
Abigail Foller is another lefty from the Texas Legacy Club with intriguing potential. Foller has a powerful left arm and uses it very well on offense, hitting around blocks at ease. When out-of-system, she doesn’t shy away from facing them and often gets to score. Foller is also a very good blocker and helped with serve-receiving at times too.
Kenzie Heffley – Texas Twisters 17 Royal – HS: Columbus – 2023
Kenzie Heffley has been consistent with her production at the tournaments we got to see her play. The 5’9” right side hitter is very physical with her game and has a very good shot selection. Heffley can hit a few different sets and that variation helps her get in good positions to score. She’s also an efficient blocker.
