Our choice this past weekend was the TOV Challenge #7, which took place at the Texas One Volleyball Club, in Richmond, where eight teams competed in the 18s Division and 12 hit the court among the 17s.
As usual, we’ve presented the most impressive players in each position during the week. Now it’s time we share our selections for the All-Tournament Team, starting with the 17s Division.
Haylie Robinson – Setter – Texas Hurricane 17 CAT 5 – HS: Pearland – 2023
It was the second time I’ve watched Haylie Robinson and she got to add more reasons to the list of qualities and skills I see in her. The Texas Hurricane 17 CAT 5 playmaker is excellent with the ball in her hands and consistently puts her hitters in a good position to score. She’s also got good size for the position and helps her team with hitting too when she’s at the net. Robinson is also a good defender and has an excellent attitude on the court.
Kate Spinelli – Right Side – Houston Skyline 17 White – HS: St. Francis Episcopal – 2024
Kate Spinelli is nothing like the traditional right side hitters we see in club volleyball. She’s not super tall or powerful on her offense, but is extremely well-rounded and capable of helping her team in a variety of ways. The 5’9” Spinelli can score with power or finesse and is smart enough to figure out when to use each of her weapons. She can play on the left too and is also a very good passer and defender.
Kenadi Hall – Outside Hitter – Texas Hurricane 17 CAT 5 – HS: Clear Lake – 2023
Kenadi Hall played a central role with her Texas Hurricane 17 CAT 5 team. The 5’8” outside hitter was involved with a lot of what the team did on the court, from scoring a lot of points at the net to avoiding several of them when at the backcourt. Hall is a very intelligent player and has such a high volleyball IQ that it feels like no play truly surprises her.
Malia Cardella – Outside Hitter – FR Premier Jrs 17 Gold – HS: Clear Lake – 2023
A teammate of Hall in their high school team Clear Lake, Malia Cardella also brought great value to her FR Premier Jrs 17 Gold team during the event. She has a little quick arm, which helps her make up for her limited size at the net with an impressive ability to hit around the block and tool it. Cardella is also very solid on defense and an excellent server.
Esosa Eregie – Middle Blocker – A1 Elite 17 Royal – 2024
Easily one of the most physical players in the division, Esosa Eregie was a beast at the net for her A1 Elite 17 Royal team. Her quick feet make of her an even more impressive player as there’s no set she can’t get to when hitting and she’s very rarely late with her blocking. Eregie has very long arms and also jumps really well, being a handful to deal with on offense.
Brenna Fleddermann – Middle Blocker – FR Premier Jrs 17 Gold – HS: Friendswood – 2024
Another physical presence at the net, Brenna Fleddermann was a key piece for her FR Premier Jrs 17 Gold team. Very active and smart with her movement, the 5’11” middle blocker made her presence felt on both sides of the ball as at the same time she was one of the team’s most used offensive options, she also made a noticeable impact on the game with her blocking.
Isabella Reid – Libero – FR Premier Jrs 17 Gold – HS: Clear Brook – 2023
The 5’3” Isabella Reid was easily the best defensive player in the division. Very quick and technical, she fought for every ball that went her way and kept most of them in play. Her passing accuracy is just ridiculous and her defense was top level too. Another feature that stood out in her game was her ability to remain calm and focused regardless of the situation.
