Our choice this past weekend was the TOV Challenge #7, which took place at the Texas One Volleyball Club, in Richmond, where eight teams competed in the 18s Division and 12 hit the court among the 17s.
As usual, we’ve presented the most impressive players in each position during the week. In our final piece about the event, please know our All-Tournament Team for the 18s Division.
Ava Derbes Ava Derbes 6'0" | S A&M Consolidated | 2022 State TX – Setter – Woodlands Revolution 18 Premier – HS: A&M Consolidated – 2022
One of the most talented setters in the entire state, Ava Derbes Ava Derbes 6'0" | S A&M Consolidated | 2022 State TX showed once again what makes of her a special talent last weekend. The Tulane commit was flawless with her ball-handling, combining precision and consistency, and made good use of her six-foot frame to be a factor at the net too with her blocking and hitting. Derbes is also an excellent defender and showed to be a great leader to her teammates.
Elizabeth Dominey – Right Side – Fort Bend Jrs 18 Legacy – HS: St. John’s – 2022
Elizabeth Dominey’s length proved to be a valuable asset to her Fort Bend Jrs 18 Legacy team in the tournament. The 5’11” right side hitter could benefit from a little bit more of consistency but is already a very skilled player who’s extremely efficient when it comes to scoring points. Dominey has an excellent reach on offense and uses her wrist really well to send the ball wherever she wants on the court.
Caroline Simpson – Outside Hitter – Woodlands Revolution 18 Adidas – HS: The Woodlands – 2022
Caroline Simpson was one of the most technical players to get on the court this past weekend. A Brookhaven College commit, she displayed excellent skills to play at the outside hitter position with impressive consistency on the backcourt and an extremely intelligent game at the net, which made of her one of her team’s best offensive players at 5’9”. Simpson’s decision-making skills are excellent too and one of the key reasons to her production.
Kaylyn Taylor – Outside Hitter – AVA TX 18 Power – HS: Fort Bend Clements – 2022
If one outside hitter we selected stood out for her ability to play smart volleyball, the other impressed by smashing the ball at the net. Kaylyn Taylor was one of the most lethal hitters in the tournament with her ability to make contact with the ball at a very high point and hit it really hard. Taylor mixed things up quite well too, going for roll shots and tips when the situation asked for it and proved to be a solid defensive player too.
Lily McWorther – Middle Blocker – Woodlands Revolution 18 Premier – HS: The Woodlands – 2022
Lily McWorther’s length and athleticism made of her one of the most impressive middle blockers in the tournament. She stands at six feet and has very long arms, a combination that makes her difficult to stop on offense, especially when combined with her ability to hit different sets. McWorther also has excellent positioning and technique with her blocking, moving well at the net and taking up a lot of space from opposing hitters.
McKenna Malone – Middle Blocker – AVA TX 18 Attack – HS: Deer Park – 2022
In terms of power, it was hard to match McKenna Malone. The AVA TX 18 Attack middle is 6’1” and has a lot of strength, especially on her lower body. She jumps well and has a very powerful right arm, which she uses to score points. Malone is hard to stop when in rhythm and is also a productive blocker. She committed to Nichols State.
Cassidy MacLean – Libero – Woodlands Revolution 18 Premier – HS: The Woodlands – 2022
Part of Woodlands Revolution 18 Premier’s success in the tournament was due to their defensive solidness and Cassidy MacLean played a big part in it. The 5’5” libero was very comfortable on the court and did a great job in leading the team’s backcourt efforts. MacLean was extremely consistent with her passing and made a lot of digs thanks to her excellent positioning and ability to anticipate plays.
