The season, experienced Class of 2023 may not present as many opportunities to add new names to the list, but we always find a way. Our ever-changing rankings set has a slightly new look as we look forward to the high school season, and this feature is all about the latest additions.
Here’s a quick look a who broke into the Nebraska 2023 rankings in this update.
Jaelyn Dicke Jaelyn Dicke 5'7" | OH Waverly | 2023 State NE – 5’7 OH/DS – Nebraska ONE 17 Black
Dicke is a new addition with a great chance to make some noise again in the fall. This Waverly product has a ton of experience on the outside for Nebraska ONE and also brings some solid ball control skills to the fold.
Sophia Weed Sophia Weed 5'11" | MB Lincoln East | 2023 State NE – 5’11 MB – VCNebraska 17 Elite
VCN keeps having great success with middle blockers like Weed. She’s quick off the floor, reads opposing setters well, and has provided some clutch kills for 17 Elite throughout the year. Expect Weed to do the same with Lincoln East later this year.
Maddie Baxa Maddie Baxa 5'3" | DS/L Sutton | 2023 NE – 5’3 DS/L – South Central NE 17 Black
Baxa represents Sutton High School, a team that broke through to the Class C2 state championship match a year ago. She will have a chance to improve on that accomplishment while also building off a strong club season with South Central.
Makenna Doht Makenna Doht 5'5" | DS/L Lincoln Pius X | 2023 NE – 5’5 DS/L – Nebraska ONE 17 Black
Doht and her Nebraska ONE team were recently in action at GJNC in the 17 Freedom division. 17 Black leaned on its strong libero throughout the Nationals appearance, and Doht is also poised to make a big impact with Lincoln Pius X in the fall.
Caroline Festersen Caroline Festersen 5'3" | DS/L Omaha Central | 2023 NE – 5’3 DS/L – Club Legacy 17 Bravo
Speaking of solid liberos, Festersen gets recognition here for her impressive work with Club Legacy this spring. Her willingness to take command of serve receive earned her a solid role in that opposite-colored jersey in 2022.
Hallie Hamilton Hallie Hamilton 5'5" | DS/L North Platte | 2023 NE – 5’6 DS/L – South Central NE 17 Black
While we’re on a run of defensive specialists, let’s give a shoutout to Hamilton from South Central. Gritty floor defense defines Hamilton’s game, and she was frequently a stabilizing force that pushed 17 Black through some clutch situations.
Clara Kunze Clara Kunze 5'9" | RS St. Paul | 2023 NE – 5’9 RS – South Central NE 17 Black
Kunze hails from St. Paul High School, so you can probably count on us mentioning her name again when she competes for that storied volleyball program. She is athletic enough to play on either pin and frequently made her mark at opposite for South Central.
Jassilin Rabe Jassilin Rabe 5'11" | MB Elkhorn South | 2023 NE – 5’11 MB – Club Legacy 17 Alpha
Here’s an entry from Club Legacy’s 17 Alpha squad. Rabe brought some great frontcourt physicality to compliment some of 17 Alpha’s other impressive attackers. This experienced middle blocker enters her senior season at Elkhorn South, a school that has been on the big stage a lot lately.
Ella Schutte Ella Schutte 5'8" | S Elkhorn | 2023 NE – 5’8 S – Club Legacy 17 Bravo
In the vast field of talented Omaha-area setters, don’t lose sight of Schutte. The Elkhorn prep athlete showed her versatility with Club Legacy this spring as a setter, defender, and even an attacker.
Jadeyn Smidt Jadeyn Smidt 5'10" | MB Gretna | 2023 NE – 5’10 MB – Club Legacy 17 Bravo
17 Bravo gets another great representative on this feature in Smidt. Club Legacy did an excellent job of using this middle blocker in a variety of situations and also got her involved behind the setter.
Mackenzie Smith Mackenzie Smith 5'10" | RS Millard West | 2023 NE – 5’10 RS – Club Legacy 17 Bravo
While, Smidt locked things down in the middle, Smith was usually around to take care of the right pin for 17 Bravo. In three-hitter rotations, you could count on Smith making a splash at opposite.
Holly Stoebner Holly Stoebner 5'7" | S Lincoln High | 2023 NE – 5’7 S – Nebraska ONE 17 Black
Stoebner is another player who took a big step forward with Nebraska ONE this year en route to a GJNC appearance. The team’s hitters thrived off consistent sets that gave everyone ample opportunities to score, and we’ll see if Stoebner can have that kind of impact with Lincoln High.
