Continue ReadingOur Lady of the Lake University coach Raul Bernal, Schreiner University coach Jeremiah Tiffin and former University of Texas at San Antonio coach Laura Groff put on a wonderful invitational volleyball camp that is dubbed “The Camp” this past week. Prep Dig was in attendance and saw some great players. A lot of them are listed either on our State Rankings or they are on our watch list to potentially be added. This is a who’s who of Central Texas volleyball players and we were very excited to see the awesome players on the courts.
This series of articles will highlight the players that stood out to me for a variety of reasons. Here are some of the 2024 players who starred:
Carly Dossett Carly Dossett 5'10" | S Steele | 2024 State TX [2024] 5-10 Setter (HS: Steele/Club: South Texas Volleyball Academy/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Carly is currently an unranked prospect in the 2024 class according to our Prep Dig Texas State Rankings, but I loved what I saw in person at nationals. Miss Dossett plays at Steele High School and also club for South Texas Volleyball Academy. In the preview article I mentioned, “She is a gifted setter who can ball with the best of them. I loved how athletic she was in the position. She is a taller setter who can also play well at the net if you need her to. Her fundamentals were very sound and she has a high volleyball IQ.” I loved watching Carly dish the ball. She truly stood out to me and my fellow scout who was in the gym during the positional drills. She looked very technically sound in every aspect of setting. Her footwork was superb and she was always in a great posture to deliver the ball. What really stood out to me was her hand contact. The ball just comes out of her hands so smoothly. When it came to the actual scrimmage drills, she was on another level. In my expert opinion, she was one of the best setters in the entire gym. I can’t wait to see her run a faster paced offense and think she will really be noticed by college coaches the moment she pushes every tempo a lot faster. She has the potential to be on our State Rankings list and I will be watching her progress very closely.
Taylor Alston Taylor Alston 5'10" | OH MacArthur | 2024 State TX [2024] 5-11 Outside (HS: McArthur/Club: South Texas Volleyball Academy/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Taylor is currently ranked as the 139th best overall prospect in the 2024 class according to our Prep Dig Texas State Rankings. Miss Alston plays at McArthur High School and also club for South Texas Volleyball Academy. In the preview article I mentioned, “What I love about her play is how violent of an approach she takes no matter the location of the set. She sees red and attacks with one purpose…to kill. Her super high contact point gives her a real advantage versus blockers.” That raw natural power was on full display throughout the entire camp. The pop on the ball was heard very loudly and kept my attention for sure. She is for sure someone who can change the momentum of the game with one powerful swing. Her size and frame should attract a lot of college attention, but they will stay and watch when they see just how good of a player she truly is. She made this Top Performer list with her production in the scrimmage drills and will keep my attention throughout the high school season.
Josslyn Abel Josslyn Abel 6'0" | MB Canyon | 2024 State TX [2024] 6-0 Middle (HS: NB Canyon/Club: South Texas Volleyball Academy/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Josslyn is currently an unranked prospect in the 2024 class according to our Prep Dig Texas State Rankings, but has a real shot at making the list soon with what we saw at nationals. Miss Abel plays at New Braunfels Canyon High School and also club for South Texas Volleyball Academy. In the preview article I mentioned, “She is a true middle who has a lot of potential in this game. Her blocking timing and press is elite level and I would like to see her go one on one against anyone. She is special because she can turn on the ball in mid air and blast away to the corners which will help her stay potent on offense for a long time.” Josslyn was one of the players I was most intrigued to watch during the camp and she did not disappoint at all. Once I made my way down to her court during the scrimmage drills, I instantly loved what I saw. She is a flat out beast in the middle and deserves a lot of praise. I think she just solidified herself into our State Rankings list with her performance. She was a monster shutting down hitters at the net and driving her feet hard into the ground to attack quick sets. You will hear more on Miss Abel soon as I will be watching her high school season closely.
We will be covering these players and more with insight into their skills and other intangibles that we see from them during individual positional drills and game play. Stay tuned to see who stood out as top performers.
