Continue ReadingOur Lady of the Lake University coach Raul Bernal, Schreiner University coach Jeremiah Tiffin and former University of Texas at San Antonio coach Laura Groff put on a wonderful invitational volleyball camp that is dubbed “The Camp” this past week. Prep Dig was in attendance and saw some great players. A lot of them are listed either on our State Rankings or they are on our watch list to potentially be added. This is a who’s who of Central Texas volleyball players and we were very excited to see the awesome players on the courts.
This series of articles will highlight the players that stood out to me for a variety of reasons. Here are some of the 2023 players who starred:
Valeria Ortiz [2023] 5-8 Setter (HS: Alexander/Club: Alamo/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Valeria is currently an unranked prospect in the 2023 class according to our Prep Dig Texas State Rankings. Miss Ortiz plays at Laredo Alexander High School and also club for Alamo. Here was what I stated prior to the camp, “She plays excellent defense out of the right back zone. Her set location is very repeatable to all hitters and coaches will love her consistency. I am intrigued to see her in person run a quick middle while in system and push the ball to the pins while out of system.” I was in awe of this young lady right away due to her athleticism. Her number was written down by another scout that I had in attendance to help with evaluations also. We both were discussing how solid her fundamentals were in the setting position. I loved how she was jump setting all locations while keeping her posture the same each time. This will keep the blockers honest and not able to cheat to certain attackers. We will keep our eye on her but she is college level material for sure.
Rylee Busse Rylee Busse 5'10" | OH Cornerstone Christian | 2023 State TX [2023] 5-11 Outside (HS: Cornerstone Christian/Club: Alamo/Verbal: University of Memphis)
Ryleee is currently ranked as the 112th best overall prospect in the 2023 class according to our Prep Dig Texas State Rankings. Miss Busse plays at Cornerstone Christian High School and also club for Alamo. Here is what I stated prior to the camp, “She can literally do it all on the court with tons of flair. I have watched her over the last two years in person and this kiddo can bang with the best. But what I love the most is how hard she plays defense out of middle back. She has libero like skills and wows you with her control.” Those ball control skills were on full display for everyone to see every time she touched the court. Ry is special and was born to play the game of volleyball. She makes any team she plays for better in every aspect of the sport. She will be a very valuable teammate at Memphis next year because of how she plays and treats her teammates. She will be an extension of her coach and a perfect leader. While at “The Camp”, she was on fire offensively as she scored at will during the scrimmage drills. Her serve receive was on point during the positional drills.
Julianna Bryant [2023] 6-0 Middle (HS: Harlingen/Club: RGV Venom/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Julianna is currently an unranked prospect in the 2023 class according to our Prep Dig Texas State Rankings, but is on our watch list. Miss Bryant plays at Harlingen High School and also club for RGV Venom. Here is what I stated during the preview article I wrote, “I have been very intrigued to watch this young fireballer in person for a while now. She is a point scoring threat from the middle who plays with a lot of fire. Her name has been thrown around to me from a couple of coaches and I will be reporting on her skills for sure.” Everything I have heard about her was completely true. Our eyes were immediately drawn to her speed, vertical, and explosiveness out of the middle position. This young lady can fly on the court. She is someone who can make a college roster right now and give a much needed boost both offensively and defensively at the net. When she connected on a ball, it was demolished with authority. I loved how fast she was laterally on the net to seal the double block on the pins. If you are looking for a middle in the 2023 class, look no further.
