Continue ReadingOur first attempt at ranking members of the Class of 2025. Last year we built a watch list and kept adding to that list as the high school and club seasons carried on. Rankings are always tricky. We tend to rank based on current skill, ability, and potential. For these first rankings, the top five were a tough call. Between dynamic setters and 6 rotation pins. Setter Reese Messer Reese Messer 5'11" | S St. James | 2025 State #6 Nation KS grabbed the top spot but Pin Alea Goolsby Alea Goolsby 5'11" | OH St. Thomas Aquinas | 2025 State #36 Nation KS and Setter/Opp Logan Parks Logan Parks 5'11" | S Blue Valley North | 2025 State #8 Nation KS were in the mix for the top spot. Three players in the top 5 play up a division, so if you’re wondering who they are, there you go.
This isn’t an easy process and players get missed. Our friend at Prep Dig, Chris Fitzgerald posted a great article sharing what goes into our ranking system here. Our rankings don’t dictate future success as a volleyball player or person. These rankings are subjective, but we feel we are on the right track with the hours spent dedicated to this process. I want to add our state rankings don’t reflect our first attempt at national rankings. Locally, we see many of these players more consistently and a player can be ranked ahead of someone in our rankings and they aren’t in the national rankings.
1. Reese Messer Reese Messer 5'11" | S St. James | 2025 State #6 Nation KS – S – St. James/ Dynasty
Messer set up on one of the more dominant teams in the country last spring, Dynasty 16 Black. It doesn’t take long to watch her on the court to know she’s a different breed. She will easily be one of the most coveted setters and players in this class. There are some sets she dishes out where your only thought is how did she do that as a 15-year-old?
2. Alea Goolsby Alea Goolsby 5'11" | OH St. Thomas Aquinas | 2025 State #36 Nation KS – OH – St. Thomas Aquinas/ KC Power
The thing we love about Goolsby is you can see she didn’t lose a step after a knee injury a couple of years ago. She plays with the same aggressiveness that makes her in our opinion the top pin in this class in the state. She rises with the best of them and knows how to put the ball away. Her passing has greatly improved, which allows her to be a true 6 rotation outside.
3. Logan Parks Logan Parks 5'11" | S Blue Valley North | 2025 State #8 Nation KS – S/RS – Blue Valley North/Mavs KC
We almost had Parks at the top because she does so many things well. She is an equally impressive setter and moves very well on the court. Her size makes her a setter that coaches will be drooling over in due time. When she’s not setting, she’s terminating from the pin and helped lead Blue Valley North to a state title as a freshman.
4. Jillian Gregory Jillian Gregory 6'0" | OH Maize South | 2025 State #66 Nation KS – OH – Maize South/Shockwave
From the south portion of the state comes the Maize South product Gregory. Another high-flying pin who plays up and more than holds her own on the club circuit. She can score with an array of shots and is also solid defensively. She is as good a competitor as you will find on the court.
5. Reagan McGivern Reagan McGivern 6'3" | MB Hayden | 2025 State KS – MB – Topeak Seaman/Mavs KC
We believe McGivern has so much upside and potential in the middle. She moves well across the front row and can score both in front and behind the setter. Her blocking is above average and she has the ability to change the course of a whole match in this category. She is patient and reads hitters as well as any young players you’ll see at this level.
6. Lily Wedman Lily Wedman 5'8" | S Blue Valley West | 2025 State KS – S – Blue Valley West/Mavs KC
The third setter in the top 6 is the very talented Wedman. She took over the Blue Valley West program a year after they won a state title and they didn’t skip a beat. She has a high volleyball IQ and moves the ball around with what looks like little effort. She is part of a very solid setting duo with Parks for the Mavs program.
7. Lauren Lopez Lauren Lopez 5'10" | OH Bishop Miege | 2025 State KS – OH – Bishop Miege/ Dynasty
Another pin who can get up and score, we watched Lopez terminate at will at times this spring for the Dynasty 15 team. We were really impressed with her court vision and ball placement. She is fearless and does a good job of working through and around the block. She is also very good in serve receive and another good 6 rotation pin.
8. Allison Heck Allison Heck 6'0" | MB Blue Valley West | 2025 State KS – MB – Blue Valley West/ KC Power
Heck is a player originally outside of our top 10 if this list would have dropped in December but her play this spring propelled her into the 8th spot. She is another middle we feel we are ranking not only on current skill but potential. She will continue to grow and get stronger which will take her game to new heights. She is a very savvy scorer and knows how to find openings around the court.
9. Ashlee Chavez Ashlee Chavez 5'9" | RS St. James | 2025 State KS – RS – St. James/ KC Power
We love for some reason southpaw right sides. We love them, even more, when they also can swing out the back row and you get that with Chavez. She was another go-getter in the kill department for Dynasty 15 Black but will make the move to KC Power in 2023. An area of improvement we saw this spring that will continue to get even better was her blocking.
10. Hadley Porter Hadley Porter 5'6" | DS/L Blue Valley Southwest | 2025 State KS – L/DS – Blue Valley Southwest/ Dynasty
Rounding out our top 10 is the tough, fearless libero from Dynasty 15 Black Porter. She gobbles up everything that comes her way. Not only does she take on the heat coming her way, she still manages to turn those into 3 balls for her setter. She is one of the premiere defenders in the state.
