Held at 3 different high schools in Spring, there will be no shortage of good volleyball to watch. With district right around the corner, this may be some teams’ last chance to see what they have and try something new before it really counts. We are looking for some great competition, some great rallies, and tenacious defensive plays. This article is all about highlighting those players whose bodies are on the floor, and whose elbow pads need a break. Below we will take a look at a few athletes who have made the list for being a gritty defensive specialist.
Semaj Cox – Elkins – Libero
If anyone gets after it, it’s Samaj Cox of Elkins High School. This athlete is all about making the play happen. On the floor, in the air, she gets to the ball. Her angles out of middle back are great, and she always is looking to pass central to the floor on defense. She will be a huge asset to Elkins this week at the Spring ISD Tournament.
Ellie Sadler – Montgomery – DS
Ellie Sadler is just a sophomore defensive specialist out of Montgomery High School. If you’re looking for defensive hustle plays, she should be on your radar. She gives 110% every time she’s on the floor. You will often see her diving for balls that seem impossible and actually getting them up and playable. She has a bright defensive future ahead of her.
Julia Ultis – Jersey Village – Libero
Julia Ultis is a great defender for Jersey Village. She does not shy away from a hard hit, and you will often see her with a few pancakes to add to her highlight real.
Tobie Newsom – New Caney – Outside/DS
Tobie Newsom is an all-around hustle player for New Caney. A libero turned 6 rotation athlete for her school team, she has learned to take her defensive capabilities all the way around and make hustle plays happen for 6 rotations. New Caney will need more of that as they move into a 6A district this season.
Tessa Woods – Katy Taylor – Libero
Tessa Woods plays calm, cool and collected in middle back for Katy Taylor. You will rarely catch her out of position, and her angles back to target are great. She will hardly ever get beat in the corners because shes not afraid to chase a ball down.
Lindy Godwin – Tomball – Setter
Lindy Godwin is on our gritty defensive specialist list because she is one of the premier setters in the Houston area that knows how to play defense.
All of these players bring something special to each of their high school teams. Hard work, grit, and determination is inherent in each of these athletes. If you want to keep up with them, they will be playing at the Spring ISD Tournament, and the schedule can be found here.
