There will be several thousand players in action across the 1,207 high school teams that compete in the six divisions of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and among them, there are some very talented ones, who certainly have a bright future in the sport.
As we continue to preview what the high school season will look like in the Houston area, we shift our focus from teams to players and highlight five of the most intriguing prospects in the districts located in the region.
In today’s article, we’ll highlight Division 6A – District 22:
Alexa Gonzalez – Setter – Dobie – Club: Houston Stellar – 2024
A 5’8” setter with great quickness and excellent location on her sets, Alexa Gonzalez does a fantastic job running Dobie’s offense. She is the kind of player that does whatever it takes to put her hitters in the best position possible to score and makes them look great on the court. Gonzalez can do it all on a volleyball court and had a well-diversified production in the last high school season, when she tallied 449 assists, 234 kills, 263 digs and 73 aces.
Cayley Hanson Cayley Hanson 6'2" | S Deer Park | 2024 State #43 Nation TX – Setter – Deer Park – Club: Houston Skyline – 2024
Cayley Hanson Cayley Hanson 6'2" | S Deer Park | 2024 State #43 Nation TX is a player that checks all the boxes when you think about an ideal prospect to play the position. Size has become more and more important in the game of volleyball and Hanson has plenty of it at 6’2”. Her big frame, however, doesn’t cost her in terms of agility as the setter moves really well on the court and is also very smooth with her game. She’s also very versatile with her game and is not only capable of hitting, but of doing it on the left. Hanson was the district’s setter of the year last season, when she produced 299 assists, 164 digs, 148 kills and 22 aces.
Emma Carro – Outside Hitter/Libero – Pasadena Memorial – Club: Houston Stellar – 2023
Emma Carro’s outstanding backcourt skills made of a solid libero during the last club season, but she’s more valuable to her Pasadena Memorial team at the pin, where she can also impact the game at the net. The 5’7” Carro thrives for her excellent positioning and superior ball control and has a very high level of attention whenever she’s on the court. She ended the last high school season with 187 kills, 128 digs, 198 passes and 38 aces.
Kennedi Alexander – Middle Blocker/Outside Hitter – Channelview – Club: Club South – 2024
A middle blocker turned into an outside hitter, Kennedi Alexander has a very high ceiling as a volleyball player. She has the whole package when it comes to physical tools, including a six-foot frame, excellent leaping ability, very good mobility and a heavy right arm. Alexander is already extremely productive but her game is still raw in some aspects, which means her room for growth is still huge.
Tatum Busch Tatum Busch 5'11" | OH Deer Park | 2024 State TX – Outside Hitter – Deer Park – Club: Houston Stellar – 2024
When of the most dynamic and complete outside hitters in the class of 2024 in the region, Tatum Busch Tatum Busch 5'11" | OH Deer Park | 2024 State TX plays a key role for her Deer Park team. She’s the rare player that, from a very early age, is extremely comfortable with every area of the game and that shows in her last season’s production of 180 kills, 164 digs, 294 passes and 17 aces. The 5’11” Busch uses her size and power to succeed at the net but is also a very calm and intelligent player, a combination that helps her make good decisions regardless of the situation.
