Emma Gardner Emma Gardner 6'3" | OH WT Woodson | 2026 State VA (MH/OH), Sofie Ferrell Sofie Ferrell 5'9" | S Woodson | 2026 State VA (S/RS) and Livia Lee (DS/L) (Woodson) – They have a roster of 18 so it will be interesting how playing time is distributed. At 6’1″ Emma is the tallest player on the roster so she has a pretty good shot of fitting in as a starter, either at middle or outside. She is the fourth player from Metro 14 to make the varsity roster as a frosh. She has long arms and can put the ball down with authority. While there are a number of setters on the roster Sofie at 5’8″ is the second tallest setter on the roster. She set for Saint James Navy, which won the East Coast championships this past club season. Livia is very athletic. She was once an outside hitter in her younger years. At 5’3″ those days are gone but she has the quickness needed to be a top libero.
Kennedy Spaid Kennedy Spaid 5'11" | OH James Wood | 2026 State VA (OH) and Brenna Corbin Brenna Corbin 5'5" | DS/L James Wood | 2026 State VA (OH/L) (James Woods) – We go back to Winchester for these two players who both played up for Blue Ridge 15. They are listed in our class of 2025 but they belong in the class of 2026. Kennedy is a powerful presence on the outside and at 5’10” she is not afraid to swing. At 5’5″ Brenna may be a little short for the outside but she has the quickness to be a top notch libero. She plays incredible defense. It would be difficult for a team to put two freshman on the court at the same time but these two have tremendous talent.
Sofia Lazareva, setter (Robinson) – The 5’9″ setter played for Virginia Elite as an outside hitter/opposite. It appeared the Robinson coach took a liking to her hands. The other setter listed on the roster is senior Paige Means, who should be a good mentor for her.
Allison Wulf, (Potomac Falls) – There is no position listed for her on the roster but she played right side for VAVA 14.
Molly Gardner DS/Libero (Briar Woods) – She has a strong right arm, but at 5’6″ not the height to play outside. She also played for VAVA 14 and is the fourth player from that team to make a varsity roster. With that strong right arm comes a powerful serve.
Sophia DelaRosa (OH/MH) (Bishop McNamara) – Sophia played last year for the VAVA 13 team. She has some length in her swing which can put some heat on the ball, though her hits tend to be a little inconsistent at this point. She played both middle and outside for VAVA so there is some flexibility with the position she plays at McNamara. She will strengthen a roster that has struggled in the WCAC, finishing next to last the previous year.
Wynn Eaton, setter (St. Johns) – She was the setter for the Virginia Elite team that also had Sofia Lazareva on their roster as an outside. The roster does list four other players who can set so playing time may be limited until she gains some experience.
Morgan Reeves, outside (St. Johns) – She stands 5’10” and played for Metro 13 a couple years ago. I have not been able to find out much about her other than that. There is also a Maya Reeves, who is a captain and plays DS/L.
Chesapeake Chirps – The Colgan Jamboree is this weekend. Eight high schools will be competing in this tournament, including Flint Hill. The Colgan/Flint Hill match up is not one to be missed….Bishop O’Connell will be travelling to North Carolina this weekend to participate in a tournament of catholic schools that have won conference championships. Should be a lot of good volleyball….Ex Holy Cross and Metro player class of 2014 Rhamat Alhassan is playing for the United States national team in the senior Pan Am cup. The 6’4″ middle did not start playing volleyball until her sophomore year in high school. Despite being one of the top basketball players in the area she chose to play for the Florida Gators in volleyball. In 2017 she won SEC player of the year. Her late entry into the sport should be strong motivation for those just getting started that they can exceed at a high level. It also helps to be 6’4″ and exceed 11 feet with your jump.
