Both teams will start district next week, so this was a great opportunity to see what each team needed to improve on before it really matters. Below we will dive into the game, and talk about a few key players for each team.
Oak Ridge had some rough patches last night in serve receive and on offense, but that is understandable considering how young this team is. They have 8 members of their roster who are either freshmen or sophomores. Two freshmen start for the War Eagles and their sophomore setter is running a 5-1. Freshman Gaby Santiago is a huge piece of the offense for Oak Ridge. She is getting a lot of experience playing 6 rotations, and playing a variety of defensive positions on the back row as well. Setter Bradi Rhodes has no problems feeding her the ball, as we saw her hit front row and back row all night. Outside hitter Ava Bertelsen was trying to find her hitting rhythm. We saw some positives in her blocking. She got tooled a couple of times but got quality touches on other attempts. Middle Luvina Oguntimehin was the other piece to Oak Ridge’s offense, scoring some sneaky points early on out of serve receive. Her block is massive, and she did get several stuff blocks. Caroline Woodfill did a great job at libero, took command on the court, and played like an upperclassman. She will definitely be an asset to grow some of those younger players in the program. Overall, Oak Ridge’s young team did not have a bad night. They battled back from deficits and turned around some incredible rallies for points. If this young team shakes off the newbie jitters, and starts playing all out, we could see a whole different outcome.
Klein Collins had a great night defensively at the net. Their two middle blockers, sophomore Ashlynn Hollis and senior Ariana Goode Ariana Goode 6'0" | MB Klein Collins | 2023 TX were absolutely dominant at the net. They kept Oak Ridge from getting anything going offensively. Ariana Goode Ariana Goode 6'0" | MB Klein Collins | 2023 TX did her job in the middle last night, stuffing balls at the tape from every position. She also tagged on several kills. Another stand-out on the block was outside hitter Kristina Cote. She didn’t have her best offensive game, but she definitely held her own at the net. Klein Collins roster is chock-full of DS’s. One stand-out was number 21, Olivia Murillo Olivia Murillo 5'7" | DS/L Klein Collins | 2024 TX . Coming off the bench, Olivia looked calm, cool, and collected on the back row, making her passing look easy. She dug some tough balls in the center of the court and passed really well out of serve receive. Overall Collin’s passing and blocking looked great. They need to figure out some offense on the pins, but if they can put everything together, they will be a well-rounded team.
