Volleyball is off and running in the KC Metro. The annual St. James Volleyball Slam was not short of big-time players. Here are some who caught our attention during the afternoon set of matches we were able to watch. We apologize but weren’t able to catch the finale.
– L – 2024 – Liberty
The junior libero played very well in the contest. She passed nails in serve receive and was getting her digs on the setter. She added a couple of aces for good measure.
– MB – 2023 – Liberty
Aiona set the tone early in the middle both with her offense and defense. She kept the defense honest with her ability to score both in front and behind the setter.
– S – 2023 – Liberty
Mullen was wheeling and dealing all match long. She makes everything look so easy and her decision-making is what sets her apart.
– OH/S – 2024 – Olathe Northwest
Huckabey tried to do it all this match. She scored from the pin. She handed out assists. She scored going over on two. She blocked. She passed in serve receive. She was on today.
– OH – 2024 – Olathe Northwest
Pierce can fill it up. She didn’t let a few errors stop her from letting it rip. What really impressed me today was her back-row defense and decision-making on tough sets.
Addisen Horn – S – 2024 – Olathe Northwest
Horn played very well as one of the two setters in the line-up. I thought overall her set placement set her hitters up for success. She also got in on some blocks and touches.
– S – 2023 – St. Teresa’s Academy
McGhie was putting the ball on the money all match. She moved around the court effortlessly in getting the ball spread around to her hitters.
– OH – 2023 – St. Teresa’s Academy
Fox was very good in the front and back row this afternoon. We know she can put the ball down with the best of them but her back row defense and passing were what caught my eye.
– RS – 2025 – St. Teresa’s Academy
She was very effective from the right pin today. She was able to find the floor consistently and hit over the block.
– MB – 2024 – St. Teresa’s Academy
She had a few kills but her defense was huge in the second set for the Stars sending back a few balls and getting touches to slow the ball down for her back row. Also, her energy on the court helps fire up her squad.
Gabby Anderson – L – 2024 – Bishop Miege
I thought Anderson was solid in the libero jersey today defensively and in the passing game. Her serving near the end of the first set was pivotal in helping the Stags grab the first set.
– OH – 2025 – Bishop Miege
She scored from both pins today and even added a two-ball here and there down the middle. She was also solid behind the service line dropping some aces.
– RS – 2023 – Washburn Rural
Russell was really good early getting into the flow of things with some skills and blocks.
– OH – 2023 – Washburn Rural
When she moves to the front row it’s instant action. Add in the nasty topspin serve and she feels up the stat sheet. There’s nothing she didn’t do today to lead her squad to the sweep.
Kate Borough – L – 2023 – Washburn Rural
Borough was lights out, digging up some heat coming her way. She was passing at a high rate in serve receive.
– S – 2024 – Washburn Rural
The junior setter was clean throughout the contest with some great sets throughout the match.
– S – 2024 – St. Thomas Aquinas
Schenck was very good at setting the ball today. She got the ball up to her hitters to take quality swings.
– RS – 2023 – St. Thomas Aquinas
Goodenow scored early and often in this match. The southpaw has a little more bounce than we thought she had! She had a couple of nice blocks in the match.
– L – 2023 – St. Thomas Aquinas
Anderson was doing her best against the heavy artillery that was the Rural attackers. She got to quite a few tough balls and kept them off the court.
– OH – 2025 – St. Thomas Aquinas
Goolsby got going later in the match after having some good balls dug up. She was nearly unstoppable down the middle once the match got going. Her defense in the back row was good also.
