Continue ReadingUSA Volleyball held it’s Girls Junior National Championships in Indianapolis at the Indiana Convention Center on June 26-30th. This is a very prestigious tournament in which teams actually had to earn their bid to play in it. The qualification process is super tough throughout the year and the best of the best rose to the top. Prep Dig was on hand to cover every serve, set, kill, and pass of the ball from start to finish. This series of articles is going to cover those athletes that stood out to me during the 10 days that I was covering the tournament.
This article is devoted to the 2025 class. I will be discussing quite a few of the wonderful athletes who wowed the crowd many times. Although I could easily write an article on every player, this will be about those who caught my eye for various reasons. Without further ado, let’s meet a few of them.
Nia Thompson [2025] 5-9 Outside (HS: Westview/Club: Wave Volleyball/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Nia is currently an unranked prospect in the state according to the 2025 Prep Dig California State Rankings. She plays for Westview High School and plays club for Wave Volleyball. I was only going to watch one set of their match, but ended up staying for the entire match when I saw what kind of athletes they had on their team. Nia amazed me with her athleticism in every aspect of the sport. She was very bouncy and super quick as a left side. I know we talk about that word athletic a lot in describing players, but Miss Thompson was special and extremely dynamic in the way she was able to jump without an approach and attack the ball during out of system plays. She was also able to stop on a dime and change her trajectory to pick up a deflection off of the block. She has a lot of potential to be a really great player in a few years based off of what I see. I will gladly be watching her career and report on her progress. But she definitely made a big impression with her offensive abilities.
Yuri Park Yuri Park 5'3" | DS/L Rancho Bernardo | 2025 State #61 Nation CA [2025] 5-4 Libero (HS: Rancho Bernardo/Club: Wave Volleyball/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Yuri is currently an unranked prospect according to the 2025 Prep Dig California State Rankings. She plays for Rancho Bernardo High School and plays club for Wave Volleyball. I loved what I saw in Yuri’s play when I watched her squad in person. On tape she showcases very well, but in person it is even better. There is so much to discuss about her play that stands out. She has amazing footwork that always seems to be balanced both before and during contact. I loved how she creates angles outside her body for digs that are non-linear. She is super fast on the court while chasing down deflections and errant digs. But what most won’t see is just how calm she is on the court. It seems as if she doesn’t get rattled on the court when things get a little tight on the court. Special players tend to slow down in those tense moments to remain calm, cool, and collected. This is exactly the type of player Miss Park is and why I think she is one the best liberos in the State of Cali. Check her out and you will not be disappointed.
Maylynn Mitchell [2025] 5-11 Outside (HS: Santiago/Club: Forza1/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Maylynn is currently an unranked prospect according to the 2025 Prep Dig California State Rankings. She plays at Santiago High School and also club for the Forza1 volleyball program. I was quite impressed with the amazing power of this incredible left side when I watched her team compete. She has a very strong upper body that she used to press and seal the net from opposing attackers. Her form was impeccable while blocking and she shut down multiple hitters when I watched. I stayed at her match even longer when I saw her throttle the ball from the outside. She is the type of attacker who can score in bunches even as she tools the block or threads the needle of a split block with authority. Her form while attacking was so beautiful to watch as she swung her arms back and forth throughout her entire approach and then unleashed a thunderous downswing on the ball. She is going to be a force to be reckoned with for a long time and we will thoroughly enjoy watching the journey.
We will be continuing with more players in each position in the next few articles that stood out to me while I covered nationals.
