Here at PrepDig, we are committed to covering and promoting as many prospects as possible, from the most popular names to the hidden gems that typically abound at the Lone Star State and during the high school season we’re also doing it by featuring the teams they play at.
Every time we’re at the gym, we take the time to give a good look at the teams on the court and we’ll try to feature as many as possible here in this space. Our topic today is the Dawson Eagles.
The Squad
Dawson entered the season in a tough spot as several key members of the team that had a great campaign last season graduated, most notably setter Kamryn Scroggins, outside hitter Kylie Nance, middle Sydney Alexander and defensive specialist Patience Lewis. The solution was to trust players like Ava Kennon, Bryce Ranney Bryce Ranney 5'10" | OH Dawson | 2023 State TX and Carter Galley Carter Galley 5'3" | DS/L Dawson | 2023 State TX to step up and take a calculated risk by moving Addison Moss to the setter position.
Key Players
A well-rounded outside hitter, Ranney dictates Dawson’s rhythm on the court in a certain way. Also a standout beach player, she’s involved with a lot of what the team does during matches. The stability Ranney provides with her excellent passing and defense is invaluable and she also does an excellent job on offense, using her skills to score even against big blocks. She’s also got a tough floating serve.
Ava Kennon
Ava Kennon
Kennon offers a very reliable presence to the Eagles in the middle. She’s very athletic, uses her 5’10” frame very well and also has long arms to complete her impressive physical package. Kennon is extremely effective on her offense, especially when hitting the slide set, and is pretty resourceful when dealing with inaccurate sets, avoiding unforced errors.
Addison Moss
Addison Moss
Originally an outside hitter, Moss has stepped up to the challenge of taking on setting duties to help the team this season. It’s been a steep process, but she’s steadily developing and feeling more comfortable in the new position. Moss didn’t have much trouble adjusting from a technical standpoint, but developing the mindset of a setter and making better choices with her ball distribution will only come with time. Her size is obviously much welcomed at the net and her offensive power too. Moss is also a solid defender on the backcourt.
Galley was a frequently-used rotation player by the Eagles last season and she stepped up to a key role, becoming the team’s starting libero. She’s very comfortable and consistent with her passing and does a great job of recovering balls on the backcourt. The 5’3″ defender is everywhere on the court, often succeeding when covering her hitters, and also does well when asked to set. Galley also scores quite a few points from the service line.
Jones is emerging as a very promising middle with Dawson. She’s very strong physically and that shows on the production she’s typically able to put on when at the net. Her offense is really difficult to stop because of her high contact point and the power she has on her right arm. She’s also a very prolific blocker, who moves well at the net and does an excellent job in closing up the space next to the pin blocker.
