Here at PrepDig, we are committed to covering and promoting as many prospects as possible, from the most popular names to the hidden gems that typically abound at the Lone Star State and during the high school season we’re also doing it by featuring the teams they play at.
Every time we’re at the gym, we take the time to give a good look at the teams on the court and we’ll try to feature as many as possible here in this space. Today, our selected team is the Jersey Village Falcons.
The Squad
The Falcons entered the season looking for new starters in two key positions – libero and setter – after the graduations of Gabriela Mansfield and Grace Lee. The team has, however, a pair of young and talented outside hitters in Elianna Freeman and Madi Diedrich and a solid middle in Sophia Burke.
Key Players
Sophia Burke
Sophia Burke
Burke has been a solid contributor for the Falcons in her first two years of high school volleyball and seems poised to an even larger role in 2022. Extremely athletic and dynamic, she has a strong presence at the net and is also one of the team’s most vocal leaders. Burke is difficult to stop on offense because of her physical power and is also a very effective blocker, combining great length, mobility and impeccable hands technique.
Elianna Freeman
Elianna Freeman
Freeman has displayed great progress in her game from last season. She has always been a very strong player at the net, but is now much more comfortable with her passing and her defense as well. The 5’8″ pin hitter is very explosive and resourceful when she goes up to hit and has now become a player that gives consistency to her team when on the backcourt.
Madi Diedrich
Madi Diedrich
Diedrich is another outside hitter from this Jersey Village team with tremendous offensive potential. Very long and athletic, she uses her very high contact point extremely well to have an advantage over opposing blockers. The Diedrich has great power on her right arm, but knows exactly when to use it or to score with a tip or a shot. She’s also a solid server.
Nathalia Castillo
Nathalia Castillo
The Falcons have found great defensive balance with Castillo and Julia Ultis occupying the libero and defensive specialist positions for the team. A senior, Castillo plays a big role in the team’s serve-receive system, even coordinating her teammates and their positioning, and also generates several transition opportunities with her digs.
Bella Spjut
Bella Spjut
A sophomore, Spujt had stepped up to become Jersey Village’s starting setter this season and has been showing she’s up to the challenge. Besides having a good size to play the position and excellent technique with the ball in her hands, Spujt has also been showing her value from the service line and on defense.
