The league is made up mostly of schools in the Long Beach unified school district (Jordan, Lakewood, Millikan, Poly and Wilson) and also includes Compton High School. Last year Lakewod high school had a sizzling season, with a 23-5 overall record and going undefeated in league (12-0). Lakewood had Oregon State commit Laura Williams, an outstanding pin hitter who was also an Under Armour All-American, which they will be without this season as she has graduated and moved on to college. However, Lakewood still looks to be a formidable opponent as they still have outside hitter Samah DaCoud, a University of Mexico commit and San Diego State University commit, setter Fatimah Hall at the helm.
Lakewood High is probably the top contender to take the league title this year, finishing last season 23-5 overall & 12-0 in league. The Lancers graduated outside hitter Laura Williams who is now at Oregon State and middle Ketesia Hall who is now at Cal State Fullerton. However, the Lancers still have plenty of talent on the court, including Ketesia’s sisters Fatimah Hall, a class of 2023 setter who is committed to San Diego State University and sophomore opposite Lala Hall. They also have senior outside hitter Samarah DaCoud Samarah DaCoud 5'10" | OH Lakewood | 2023 CA who is committed to the University of New Mexico and senior libero Courtni Youngblood who is committed to UC Santa Barbara. The Lancers swept Mater Dei earlier this season and haven’t looked back since. They are currently 8-3 overall with their 3 losses coming from Huntington Beach High School and Marymount High School and they are already off to a hot start in league at 3-0 defeating Jordan, Poly, and Cabrillo. The Lancers will likely see challenges when they face Wilson and Milikan.
Long Beach Wilson’s 6’2” junior outside hitter, Chloe Pravednikov, is definitely one to watch this fall and a big reason that Wilson could be a contender for the league title this season. The Pepperdine university commit has great length and range on the pin. Another key contributor is libero Sydney Scott, who patrols the back row with authority and is a spunky competitor who doesn’t let a lot of balls hit the floor. Wilson is off to a hot start at 10-6 overall and a 4-0 start in league play. They picked up a quality win in league by taking the first match against Milikan in four sets (3-1).
Milikan is a contender this year, with some key seniors leading the charge. Senior setter Alessia Filocamo is smart and runs a fast offense. She has a great connection with middle blocker Aaliyah Fasavalu, who was plagued by injuries last season but is now healthy. The middle is athletic with a great vertical and speed, she moves well laterally at the net. The Rams also have a quick pin hitter in junior Elle Lundahl, who is a smart and efficient hitter. The Rams are 8-2 overall and have only lost to Wilson, who they will get another shot at, and in the preseason to Los Alamitos.
Long Beach Poly could be looking at a rebuilding year, having graduated Adonia Faumuina and Under Armour All-American, Rylie McGinest who are both at USC now. They also graduated libero Maya De Los Reyes who has moved on to the University of Oregon. The Jackrabbits have younger siblings looking to take their place in the spotlight with Rylie’s sister Halie McGinest and Maya’s sister Macie looking to make their mark. Additionally, Poly has several players that could end up being substantial contributors in Josephine Gore a 6′ junior setter, Imajaleah Goggins, as senior middle blocker, junior outside hitter Cinthia Hinojosa, and a promising young middle blocker in 6’1” sophomore Layla Moore. The Jackrabbits had a rough start to the season, currently with a 1-11 overall record but have tons of potential and can still turn it around in league play if they find their groove. So don’t count the Jackrabbits out just yet.
